G'day all,
I been trying to analyze the the school system for contract drivers and figure out whats the best way to go. I realize that contract driving is probably the least desirable way to go...but it fits my situation at the moment (Owned a marina and boat service facility that got trashed by a hurricane, insurance and FEMA bailed). I have brought the art of pinching a penny to a whole new art form
I listed a table (see below PDF download) with commitment time and financial stats. I left the emotional part out of it( i.e. how people feel about a certain company) as it has two many variables. Besides my feeling is that whatever you take on for a short term or long term commitment is what you make of it.
So my question is their information on this table that is wrong. I spent a ton of time researching this by visiting dozens upon dozens of websites....and talking with recruiters, at least the recruiters I could get a hold of. Is there a company out their I have missed that offers paid CDL school for contract driving?
I look forward to your input and advise. In my mind I have narrowed my choices down based on this info, but things are always subject to change before I sign on the dotted line.
Note: Disregard terminal info. , I used this for my location in York Pa. Also if you have any input I would ask that its factual (not ... I heard from a guy, who heard it from his 3rd cousin's friend who heard it from...) so I can adjust this table and re-post it for myself and any other greenhorn that stumbles on it in the future.

Millis Transfer- http://www.millistransfer.com/
Just looking at your chart which is VERY nice, It looks to me that central would be the best choice....JMO
American TruckerMerlin1477024 Thanks this. -
I was very happy with the training and time frame of going through Schneiders training. I went to a non Schneider school, paid my own way, went through their specific training, and was on my way. They have OTR positions that will reimburse you for your schooling (although I ate the tuition and picked a dedicated route fr numerous reasons including being home several times a week). They have a terminal in Corapolis, PA. The pay is greater than I think anyone of the companies you listed. If you look for my posts here http://www.thetruckersreport.com/truckingindustryforum/schneider/117669-headed-for-indianapolis-orientation-august-7th.html
you can get a real time idea of how their training program goes (once you are out of school).
Either way, Good Luck!

Hey AT and Raider, Appreciate the input and the information. However, the idea of the thread is no money up front which all the companies listed in the comparison table offer. Something that both Millis and Schnieder don't offer. To bad about Schnieder as they used to...figures with my luck...day late and a dollar short. Ahhhh well, such is life.
Just to be clear ...the idea of this thread is for people that financially have their back against the wall for one reason or the other. Myself, I have a daughter soon to be entering college and diverting any funding from that venture to me is unacceptable. -
well here in Tn i was able to get a WIA grant through the unemployment office that covers my school cost so this way i am open to go with wich ever company fits best for them and myself just somthing to think about (no contract) with company

I can confirm RYECON's statement. I attended a SAGE Truck Driver Training School that was offered through Surry Community College in Yadkinville, NC. We had at least one student that got his full tuition paid for by a WIA (Workforce in Action) grant. It's my understanding that to qualify you have to have been displaced from an employer that sent your job overseas. I was displaced by a larger company acquiring our assets and didn't need our office staff so I didn't qualify, but sounds like a good program if you can tap it.
Other than finding government funds in advance for school, I think you'll be faced with coming out of pocket and signing on with a company that offers a tuition reimbursement program like Roehl and Schneider (certain routes). Good luck to you! -
We work for Swift, we both did the Swift training but mine was free under the spousal plan. However my husband paid.
I say all of that so you'll know I'm not just talking without facts.
The reimbursement on your chart looks a bit off. While you do pay in $150 per month they begin the reimbursement to you then. So each month you pay in $150 and they reimburse you $75. -
Hi Nana,
I certainly am not going to butt heads with you, I've read a ton of your posts and know that is a losing proposition
The submitted those numbers on the chart from Swift are what I got from the recruiter and a separate website that supposedly interviewed a Swift recruiter. They both jibbed so its what I went with. If you can find out differently and its fact...I'll change the chart and say T Nana said so !
My understanding as it sits is that for 13 months you pay a buck fifty ... 14 through the 26 month you see that buck fifty come back and hit your check each month. So after a two year and couple month stint your education was free. Not a bad incentive from Swift to hang around another year after your contract is up. -
Okay. I just spoke to the recruitment office in Phoenix. It has not changed. You still begin getting the reimbursement month one. Understand though, that it takes 13 months for your payments to pay the loan and 26 months for the reimbursement to be completed.
I called the office because I thought it might have changed......I know what we get because it's shown on our payroll records. -
Hey PCD,
I unfortunately didn't technically..by definition...have my job sent over seas. Though it just might of ended there after the hurricane leveled the marina.
I checked WIA after ryecon posted..and I don't fit the model for sponsorship. Its like you described.
I'm a Vet...so I ran that out. VA will cough up some dough but its nickle and dime stuff...money is suppose to go to food and housing allowance... nothing for tuition. So the Fed is all there is left and thats not a super great deal either. The tuition reimbursement program is great..IF...you get hired by one of those companies and IF you get one of those reimbursement routes. In the NAVY I was an operator..I've learned to gut it out in trying times...served me well since and hopefully will in a contract job....no matter how horrifying the scuttlebutt
Now is there any other contract companies out there?
