Hello all!
I'm a firefighter, currently have a NON-CDL Class B to drive the engines and such. I want to upgrade to a CDL Class A, have my permit already. I need a vehicle to test in though. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Or, is anyone here from Lake/McHenry/Cook/Kane Counties in Illinois that will let me use your vehicle and some of your time to get firmiliar with your vehicle to test with for a small fee?
Thanks for the help!
Mike

I live a few miles north of you in Wisconsin (Walworth county) I am in the finishing stages of my 10 week course to obtain my class A at Fox Vally Tech. in Appleton Wisconsin. Several of our instructors are certified state testers for the CDL and will test the out of the public people for this license. The college also will provide a testing truck for a person coming off the street for this test. I know the charge is $380. for the use of their truck and $85.00 for the state fees for the test as well as the DMV fees for your hard copy license and endorsements you will have to pay for . You might check with your state college schools and see if they too offer this service. If you are a student at the school I attend there are no fees for using their truck for your testing needs. I have been able to witness at least 40 people like yourself paying for this service. I will add that 90% of them fail the test on their first try. The last one didn't know where the compressor was located, then proceeded to knock a light post down during the test. . (there are no shortcuts). Getting the permit is easy , getting the license is much harder. I know your state had a big problem in the past regarding Selling CDL licences for a under the table fee. The feds have cracked down on your state and they are watching closely .Illinois residents are permitted to test in Wisconsin but illinois will make you test again in their state to get the licence issued in that state. It seems many residents in your state have crossed the border into Wisconsin to get a Wisconsin license.I may be wrong but I think that Illinois makes Everyone re test now when they move into illinois and and try to transfer their license to Illinois. I think the feds are doing this in your state as part of the crackdown. Most states are now paying 100% of the costs to go to accredited driving schools that's how I got my schooling paid for here. I also believe that if you do get your licence yourself without accredited training and are planning to use it for a driving job that doors at trucking companies will slam shut and no employment will be offered to you. My class has 2 employed fire fighters in it and they are doing what you want to do but are taking the whole class at school (10 weeks) their departments sent them to this school and paid for their tuition and they also are getting their wages from the fire department. .I am quite sure your state also will pay for your COMPLEATE training and testing, if not through your fire department you might try contacting your state job service for information. As far as your idea of finding a OO willing to let you use your permit to drive their truck and get "familiar" I think that may be hard for you to do (not impossible) but hard for insurance reasons. Good luck to you and I hope you find what you are looking for!Last edited: May 31, 2010

You're correct, Out of State Drivers must re-test in the State of Illinois to be issued an Illinois license, this INCLUDES your regular class D license if issued from another state. Finding employment isn't a problem, he's already hired by the Fire Station, but he's a Class B holder and needs a Class A combination vehicle. To be honest sir, if you're looking for a Class A vehicle to use, you may want to check out outlaying volunteer fire departments, some of those volunteers may be farmers, farmers use tractor trailers for hauling in the crop... might be worth a shot.
