Your discharge classification is probably 39-10, Medical, did not meet minimum medical standards for service. Since you were only in for 30 days, you don't need to put on the application about the time in the military. There is no need to offer up any information at all about the PTSD, since it obviously isn't contained in any medical evaluations you had prior to military time, or since. Some things can be and are better left unsaid.
However if you are taking any prescribed medication , these need to be listed and addressed. Just keep in mind that you need to "play well with others" in this industry!
thelastamericanhippy and borobarnett Thank this. -

I still have not made a decision of who I want to go with. I dont have my CDL and dont have the money at this time to get myself through schooling so it looks like i'm going to have to sign a contract, and I know thats the route nobody ever wants to take but i've read some on here that has made it work. I guess its all about the attitude and work ethic and i've got both so it should work out...

Just know going in that such arrangements are the trucking industry's version of predatory lending. Loan sharking. The "school game" is a stand-alone profit center for some of the carriers. It's a way they make money that has nothing to do with moving freight. It is legal, and they do hold up their end of the deal, but there's no slack on the driver's end, and no safety net by design. It's kind of like how the house never cheats in Las Vegas because they don't have to. The odds of the games already favor them.borobarnett Thanks this.

How many drivers get hired on by the big companies each week like swift, crst, etc.?
I would hate to quit my job and get to orientation and them say we dont need you or something like that. Has that ever happen to anyone? -
I've never been one of the eliminated people, but I've seen a group of 50-60 cut down to 15 or so. The reasons for the cuts were about half failed drug tests, and most of the the other half failed their driving test. A few were cut for attitude problems during orientation. (Getting in the instructor's face, arguing for the sake of it, etc.)
On the up side, the druggies don't really count. They should have known better. The driving failures were almost as hopeless. Either the candidates were fooling themselves and just hoped to get lucky somehow, or were truly delusional and thought they were good drivers when they weren't.
Bottom line is if you can drive, don't do drugs, and know how to take instruction and behave in a professional manner, you should have no problem getting hired.
EDIT: What I just described was not "in company" school grads, but a pool of 1+ yr experienced guys who applied from outside. I have no idea what the fail ratio is for the former.Last edited: Sep 9, 2010
