The Big Boys

Anyone remember Carolina Freight out of Cherryville, NC? Used to run red and black Fords in the later years, Macks before that I think. I was very young when they closed up, but I remember seeing their trucks running through town. Several people around here used to work for them, and I've heard them talking about mixing the used motor oil in with the fuel to save money on fuel and get rid of the oil at the same time. You could see one of their trucks coming from miles away just by the smoke.

Con-way Freight used to be CCX, CSE, and CWX.. FedEx Freight was American Freightways and Viking.. UPS Freight was Overnite and Motor Cargo.. Estes acquired GI Trucking to gain a foothold out west..

Drivers - things change so just adapt.. I 100% fully understand that I am not a 40 year driver but although you can look back and remember with a smile, you cannot dwell..

I started at CCX which was a much better place to work than Con-way Freight - I smile when I think back to the stupid uniforms but sensible company policies which is no longer the case at CNWY. This seems to be the most prevalent at the former FedEx carriers - Viking and American Freight - drivers at FedEx Freight hate it but continue on since they understand business is business..

The long standing company that has butchered the industry the most in the last 5 or so years is by far YRC. Yellow acquired and destroyed Roadway then taking on the "YRC" name. YRC acquired and absolutely destroyed the two service oriented and profitable union regional carriers USF Holland and NewPenn.. It is what it is I guess..

For anyone who knows of the situation by Erie, Pa regarding the truck hit and run accident claiming the life of a young woman.. Props to the Holland driver that blocked I90 by turning his truck across the road so nobody else would run over the the victim while she was laying in the road.. I thank you as do thousands of American truck drivers...

 

Lets see,anyone remember Shirley temple,thats what they were called on the cb(Sam Tanksley) or Stoops or Tomahawk,then there was good ole dollar down(Midwest dist.)Is big R still around?I don't see Corn flake out there anymore either.

 

The only one that comes to mind is ETV or something like that.

 

It was CR england that made me want to be a Trucker when I was a little Kid. Used to be really beautiful big shiny fast trucks many moons ago mind you. Not sure about Werner. But Swift and JB are not "old companies" in my mind. They were designed to be bottom feeder mega companies.

And the first company I worked for was Midwestern, home of the Dollar Truck, LOL! Detroit to Tarrytown, must have driven that route a thousand times.

 

I remember P.I.E., (Pacific Intermountain Express), running all over the place. The Army sent me away for a long time, haven't seen them since I came home. Deregulation get them?

 

This is great! I remember PST! There slogan was "Pick a Color" referring to the colors of their trucks. Man some of em where ugggggglyyyyy! You can still see some old Burlington trailers around too. I started in a cabover for Mayflower. There's an old school company!

 

I remember reading about Midwestern Distribution I think it was. Were they out of Missouri? They would mix the dirty drained oil in with the fuel . . . locked out the high gear for the company drivers . . . told the o/o's they could have truck black with white stripes or white with black stripes, because, after all, "it is their truck"
