I'm glad I grew up in NYC and learned about driving in my families produce company in Hunts Point. I was spotting trailers on my summer vacations when I had my learners permit.....at 16. Everyone knocks NY, but any problem I ever had was always in Miami. In fact, when I was hauling seafood out of Miami, it was the only place I was ever at that I was followed and escorted by armed guards. Like everyone has said, throw the GPS in the bunk, call ahead for truck specific directions and read the signs. Yes the traffic is horrendous, but you will learn real quick how to survive, if you don't we'll be hearing about it on this blog about how bad it is.

Trainer? I trained myself... applied for the job at 10AM and was heading to load at 2PM... went thru Chicago the first night... no map, no extra clothes, no money... followed the guy in front of me thru town and thank God he was also going to Indiana!

DITTO, DITTO, DITTO, I am just amazed at the attitudes of new drivers starting out now young and old with their sense of entitlement....I don't do this, I don't that I won't go here or there. It's your job all your are bieng asked to do is your job, just like everyone else in the working world.

My first month on the road solo I was sent through NYC three times, once during the big blizzard. Just got behind some other trucks and followed them through. Spent several hours in advance writing down all the directions and routes so I had a good idea what to look out for and not miss a turn. It was stressful, but made it through with no problems.

Curiously asking, how do you know if they are going through instead of getting into the city? Just change to chase another truck if the one your following takes an exit?
