Hey all,
Possible wannabe trucker here. I like the idea of having freedom and being your own boss, but trying to get a better idea of what trucking life is like. One thing I would be worried about is theft. Is this a problem for anybody? I imagine being asleep in the truck and then waking up because of a big thump coming from the back. What do you do in that situation? Does it ever happen? Have any truckers here been targets for theft and other crimes?
Theft ?

I've run into a few problems. Once a tranny lot lizard and her/his boyfriend tried to break into my truck down in Laredo, I had a gun and scared them away however they jacked some guy up down the street about an hour later. I had my truck broken into in South Carolina. Aside from that, most nights I sleep with my windows wide open and nobody bothers me. Anymore I'm in rural areas here in the midwest, but for what it's worth my driver door lock hasn't worked in months, although I don't leave anything in there when I leave it parked for the weekend.

The Abloy padlocks (and their equivalents) that many companies now use can't be cut with anything less than a torch. Thieves know what they are, and just move on if your trailer has one.
As for the cab, a ratchet strap connecting the inside doorhandles while you're asleep never hurts. You'll sleep better if nothing else.
If someone smashes your windows to get in while you're sleeping, they are either a truly desperate criminal or drugged out of their skull. Meaning it's time for the 10% (police grade) pepper spray, and don't stop until the can is empty.
If he gets hurt from leaping backward out of your truck, like maybe sustains a skull fracture, two broken arms, and ends up head down in a dumpster across the lot, well, so it goes. Being a crook is a risky occupation. -
I find keeping a german shepherd in the truck drastically reduces anyones want to break in.

I'd lock up on my Costco load, but the backhauls I rarely locked. Most of them were 6,000 lbs rolls of paper. Anything that could get one of those out of the trailer would have just eaten my lock for a snack.....

We had a dog and never had a problem. You do need to be wary of wear you park though. Maybe leave you tv on when you go in the truck stop or little things like that to make it look like there is someone inside the truck. Another thing you can do while asleep is hook a bungy cord to your door and run it to your airhorn. If you door opens for any reason this will act as a truck alarm and definitely wake everyone up! Some team driver operation stickers or other theft deterrent stickers can be a good deterrent. Like that one driver said those abloy's are bad ### locks! A lot of companies require you buy them. They also make Kingpin locks. For the most part you will develop your own little way to protect your stuff. Always be alert and that will be your best defense. Good luck to you.

I also find having an NRA sticker helps too.

Hi, here's a couple things or more i did, first i invested in a $4.00 beeper light, thats flashes red, these are made for bycyles for rear tail light , there kinda small so i taped that too dash , were you could see it from the window , and you have too be carefull with company, truck , but i seen these alarm stickers from a company about 2"" x4" in size, i found at a swap meet, i plasterd these on both sides of the bunk , that says this is procited by alarm , then as i walk away , about 10 feet in front of truck in plain veiw , i turn around , like i hold my hand out and pretend too push a button, now my alarm is going ,so they thinking, cause they see that beeping-flasing light, on dash, cheap but work's, next i had my big furball with me all 16 pounds of pure heck, she was a lovable , but if her turn too guard the truck, wacth out, cause she turn into a pitbull in a sec and have no trouble ripping your face off as she leeps from truck, she would lay on dash , and take up whole dash on top wacthing everyboby all night long or her second fav spot was the driver seat,, but too be even safer from all the crazy out there , i take a a racthing strap and run between the armrest, also i had my pepper spray and if they got thru all that i have at last restort my cattle prod , and i aim for the eyes, becuse if there drugged out anyway, so wouldnt matter anyway, most k-whopper , can be broke into fairly easy too , even with door locked, i myself can get into any trl in less then a min,, it's a cruil world and we should trust each, but thats not the real world, also stay away from the cheap truck stop locks there okay till you get back too the yard, dont belive the shipper or rec , when they say this all need is this tin seal , they will tell you this a good as any padlock, i also double tin seal em , one for me and one for company , plus my heavy master lock, only one i trust , plus my barel lock on rear doors, i never lost a load , but i heard drivers from within the company i worked for, that in ny , they would follow you, and opean the doors and take your goods as you go down the road, i thought it was bs, cause if i seen my doors a flapping i be pulling over ,i told em,but pay attion too your surroundings , carry a magum heavy flashight , those long ones , theyll knock a lot lizard or anyboby for a loop, also heres a sad but true foot note, anytime you knock someboby for a loop or they fallen off your truck, i think, not sure , but your liable for there injurys or can sue you, i have too do more reserch on that one, sorry for long post, but i just want too let you know what up,

That's a neat trick with the bungee cord/air horn thing. I have a set of those locks that my insurance company were giving away. Since I don't haul dry van anymore, I use one of the locks to chain up my little 16' trailer at home. One time my neighbor needed to borrow my trailer but didn't have the key to unlock it. I told him to get in my garage (they have the keys for everything else) and just cut it off with the bolt cutters. It snapped one of the cutters on the bolt cutter and barely made a mark on the lock. They are some bad ### locks.chompi Thanks this.
