I recently completed school and I am set to start with Werner on Monday. I will be at there Indianapolis location. I was wondering if anybody could help answer a question for me. I have obtained my DOT card. I am not sure but I have heard that there is another medical evaluation when you get there. I have high blood pressure which I take Medication for and I also have a hernia in my stomach. I can't hide the hernia and I wear a belt for it. I have letters from my personal Doctor stating that That I am fit to drive a rig. Does anyone know exactly what the Werner medical exam covers and will the letters be any good? I would hate to get down to Indy on Monday then have to turn around and go back home. Any help on this would be appreciated. I was upfront with the school I went to and they seem to think it will not be an issue because of the Doctors letters. I was also told that the freight I would be hauling was 99% no touch. I have no problems lifting up to 75 pounds.

You'll probably have to go through another dot physical with their doctors and you might have to do some basic lifting and/or pulling movements. You can expect to take a dot physical with almost any new company you hire on with regardless of how long it's been since the last one. Just take your bp meds and have your doctors note handy and you should be fine.
-
Alot of companies say no to a hernia......................
no idea about Weiners policy !!!!! -
the BP meds will be no problem. you need a doctors note stating how long you have been on them and your BP is under control. fail to have that note/letter, you're going home.
as for the hernia..........you're going home.............they do not want a problem with you filing workmans comp or something.
sorry...........you're not going anywhere's until the hernia is repaired.
why don't you just call them..?? a long distance call is better to pay for than a bus ticket home.......... -
Thanks for the input. I called Werner and explained the situation. They are checking with their Doctors. I was told that they may fax a release to my doctor and fill it out and fax it back. I will know more tomorrow. Funny thing is that I told the school I went to about it and they said I just needed my DOT card. I hope I did not just spend all this money for nothing.
-
yeah, you probably did..............
you would need to get the hernia repaired, and then give time for recovery. you might not be able to go to werner or anyone for about 2 to 3 months........
and by the time all this faxing is going on, figure about another 2 to 3 weeks just for this. they ain't gonna rush for you or anyone. -
Don't freak out ,what these guys are saying about the hernia is not quite right. My dad drove for several years with type of hernia you described and all he had to do is get a release from his doctor. Not all hernias will disqualify you so just wait and let them evaluate everything.
Dads hernia was caused by a staple pulling loose after a gallbladder surgery he had,it caused a large lump on his abdomen that you can't miss but he worked till he retired with it.
And no you didn't waste your money but you may have to jump through a few hoops to get hired so get ready. -
Would YOU hire a guy who may get hurt the first day on the job and risk having to pay a workman's comp claim? I doubt it...
Sorry to say this but your school lied to you... few companies will mess with damaged goods... can you blame them? They wanted your $$$ plain and simple. -
that was "then" this is NOW..........
its called LAWSUITS, WORKMAN'S COMP CLAIMS, etc,etc..........
no company wants to be liable for medical care for a known defect. he will have to get the hernia repaired, THEN get a doctors release, then probably will have to go through re-fresher training, then apply for jobs again, then go through orientation............
you can NOT COMPARE what WAS to WHAT IS............. -
Driver I don't know why you're so bent on keeping this guy out of the industry but you're negativity is not helpful and you're simply wrong. Drivers are given medical variances on a routine basis once things have been evaluated and proven to not be unsafe. To the original poster- Like I said talk to werner send them whatever they need and then let them check everything out. If you do need the hernia repaired it may be a minor surgery that won't require alot of off time. Either way there's no since worrying about it until you have solid answers to work with.
