Who all wants you to start out flatbed? I wouldn't base your career on what "they" want you to do. Not that there is anything wrong with it but flatbed is very physical work. It will definitely help keep you in shape while out on the road. I believe flatbed pays a little more than dryvan.

I'm not trying to be a smart pants or synical but you do realize that maverick and tmc are flatbed companies only. they're pushing you flat because that's all they do.
As for falcon, If i remember right they're based of Ohio and run both dry van and flats. I'm not sure what you're looking for, but if you're from michigan and you ever want to see home on a regular basis Falcon would be your best bet. If you haven't noticed.... Michigan is pretty much a dead state. I go back to where I grew up near saginaw and the only thing that's changed is which building's are vacant and where the new self serve carwash is. Because of this fact the further the company is from michigan, the less likely you'll get a load near where you're from. Also, what's to say that if you were with falcon that you couldn't pull van with them in the future if you didn't like skateboarding. And I've seen this with other companies that run van and flats, if they have no flat loads some times the flatbed trucks will run vans. I can't say I've seen a falcon truck doing this, but I have seen others doing it.
a little more about flat is that it's more seasonal than van's/refer's, everything slows down in the winter (jan-mid march) Flats supposedly slow down a little more, so I know alot of owner ops that will run flats during spring and summer and switch to vans/refers during the colder climates when flat loads drop off. -
i hear ya and i'm not the sensitive type. falcon and maverick both have different divisions and are not strictly flatbed tmc is the only one that is strictly flatbed
