Come mid-nov. i'll have 2 yrs OTR solo in. Looking for something LOCAL out of Iowa (waterloo/DSM area). I'm familiar with Great Lakes/Midwest region. I enjoy driving, but just want HOME every night.
I've been made 'offers', but when the company mentions 'local' driving, then says "oh you'll be home for 48=hrs every week"...that to me isnt local. LOCAL is home every night after driving 8-10 hrs.

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

You might consider calling up Fedex Ground recruiting and seeing if they have any local owner-ops looking for people. The Fedex ground guys are home almost every night from my understanding.
DickJones Thanks this. -
thanx for the info....will have to do that.
dont i have to have a high roll-over rate to work at FedEx? LOL.....just kidding.
-
I see a company called "Hawkeye Food service" making a push further out of Iowa,.....
Might be worth looking into,.... -
LOL. I had a guy describing the scene in Iowa last winter as FedEx's attempt to turn the grassy median into their own private parking lot.

Haul Fuel. It probably won't be 8-10 hour days though. More like 10-12. The trade off with local jobs seems to be the actual time you have to enjoy being home. LTL night line haul or fuel delivery finds you home sleeping during the day.
Personally I prefer a regional deal to local. A perfect 2 week run for me is 3 out and back dedicated loads. Leave Mon home Wed afternoon...Leave Thursday, home Sat morning. Off Sun-Mon... Leave Tuesday back Thurs PM/ Friday AM then start the cycle over again. This cycle averages around $1000 a week for the 2 week cycle and the quality of home time is better than I would get working local and home every night too tired to do anything but sleep. In 2 weeks that's sleeping in the truck 6 nights, Home 8 nights with 5 complete days off. -
I used to see some of those local guys sleeping on their steering wheels on the ramps along the Avenue of the Saints. I don't know which town is nearer, Waterloo is about 100 miles from Des Moines by short miles, if you are in or near the waterhole, there is Dohrn, and Vitran /Sysco in Waterloo, and Martin Brothers and Target Distribution in Cedar Falls and many of the OTR companies that operate there have regular day runs that you might get if you get lucky. The intermodal operations run around there, too; US 20 and 218/380 are pretty good lanes, and just to the south you have I-80.
There are lots of companies; I just listed the ones I recall, Hawkeye Foodservice has terminals near Iowa City, and in West Union(they took over H&H). -
You might also want to check excavating companies as well. There might also be opportunities for regional intermodal too.
