Is it possible for a recent graduate to start off as an owner operator and get freight? Do you have to have a great deal of experience? I know many will say it's almost impossible, but is it possible?

Yes, you can always get freight. The real question will be, "Will you make a Profit" ?
The chance that somebody straight out of truck driving school, making a profit, is very slim in my opinion.
Of course your results may vary.Last edited: Sep 20, 2010

anything is "possible", like bankruptcy, repairs, lack of money in the bank, falling behind in truck (mortgage) payments, not having at least the now required 20% down payment money for a truck, not having a business plan to show the banker, etc,etc.....
get experience first and foremost, because after as little as 4 months, you might be looking for a job in another industry,
it takes business sense to run a business, many say they have 'sense" but that is simply not enough. one has to know where the pennies are. one has to have control over emotions for chrome and gizmo's lest one becomes chrome rich, but wallet poor.

lest one becomes chrome rich but wallet poor hahahaha!!
get a job as a company driver. truck driving isnt for everyone, you have to love it or you will dwell on everything you dont like. -
If you plan to become an owner OP by going out and buying a truck and trailer, then going to load boards or company's looking for freight, I would say that it will not happen.
For one thing you would probably never get insurance for the truck, and if you did it would cost a mint.
Second would be the freight insurance. What company would want to insure a new driver/ OO with there freight?
Other option would be buy a truck and lease to a company. This you could probably do, if it was with a company that hired new drivers. Which lowers the number of company's you have to choose from allot. And in this case you would be better off going to one of these company's as a company driver and getting the experience, then doing your own thing. -
Heck, even Swift requires 6mo exp before going L/O.

Most truck dealers and bank lenders won't even give you a truck unless you have a couple years experience. If for some reason you can bypass that your next step is to find an insurance company that will cover you. My advice would be to make your mistakes on the companies dime. You wouldn't by a jet and start an airline company unless you had experience would you?
