I was thinking about signing up as a civilian worker in the military and perhaps travel overseas. Besides this, is there any other ways I can travel with my skills or with any other American organization (Military, Non-profit, for profit, church group, or any other) and be able to see the globe? In short I want to travel with my job if possible. Any advice on doing this?

    Any advice on this?

If you can pick up an Army or Navy Times newspaper. They always have ads in the classified for overseas work. You can find these at any military base and if you have no luck there maybe the local recruiter can help you.

You can try The Peace Corps and various religious groups doing missionary work. Generally the military or our government have few jobs overseas that are not highly specilaized or require extensive training/degrees. Military/government uses a lot of locals contracted for the work.

Not sure what your experience is but if you have technical background such as computers, networking, telecommunications, etc., there are quite a few civilian companies that do hire here for overseas work. This is a good job site to find jobs. This engine searches actual employers WEB site job listings. It gives you the ability to specify overseas locations.

Regardless of who you hire on with make sure you do your research. Many companies offer what appear to be really high salaries. Once you get there you find the cost of living really eats up your pay!

    Good luck!

I just read one of your other posts about driving jobs in Iraq and Afghanistan. To give you an idea of what could occur here is a video of a Halliburton driver in Iraq who videotaped an ambush on his convoy.

I was offered a position making $1500 a day in Iraq with all expenses paid, i.e. meals, lodging, everything. The job required working outside of military bases in the countryside and was 7 days a week, 12 hours a day. The company did not guarentee any military escort and travel was by ground modes and only by air in the event of an emergency situation. I politely told them when hell freezes over please call me back and I will consider it!!!

That has happened to my father once when he got a temp job in New York. So I don't want to the same to happen to me.

The question is how do I find out it is a scam and also how do I find out the cost of living in that area?

As for determining it is a scam it could be difficult to do. First off if the position is offered by a reputable company (not employment agency) then you can check the company out easily enough. In most cases companies will not put their reputation on the line trying to screw a prospective employee.

The problems mostly come from agencies or independent headhunters. All bets are off in that case!! I am sure there are some good agencies out there but remember they are in their business to make money! They might not lie to you (some might) but instead they just don't tell the whole story.

In either case you need to make sure that before you sign any paperwork with them, any at all, or give them your highly personal information that you first have a job offer with specific details about the job, transport to and from the country, who you're working for, who's paying your salary, etc., etc. You should create a checklist of questions to ask when you call or email about the position.

As an example of asking your questions another job offer I had was for $125K/Yr plus per diem pay to work in the Netherlands. Every 6 months they would even pay for me to fly round trip to home for vacation time. Yeah, I was on that one because it is beautiful there. I searched the company, they were a large concern contracting to the US Gov and everything looked legit and it was. Luckily for me I was referred to the company by a friend who had worked for them. He told me that they only had 6 months left on their contract with the Gov. I called and spoke with the company recruiter and he admitted it when asked. If I had taken the contract I would only have been there 6 months max and not qualify for the tax free status and been royally screwed.

If you do receive a job offer make sure there is a contract attached with guarenteed minimum incomes, benefits, length of service, etc. all spelled out.

As for researching the cost of living I have not found any one place that was particularly good or accurate for information. The best way to do it is write a list of your expected expenses such as housing, transportation costs, medical costs, etc. Then just Google the heck out of the country and read all of the news stories, business news, economic news, etc. you can find. On top of giving you bits of info they may provide links to various other info sources.

Good luck and stay away from the hot zones! You certainly can't spend any of that money if your dead!!
