I've been reading these forums for a few days now. I've gotten alot of good advice on here. So thank you. I was seriously a greyhound ticket away from CR Englands training school, until I started reading yalls posts, and searching a bit more online. Because of yalls help, I turned them down and found a better option.
I will be attending Oklahoma City's, Roadmasters school. It's extremely expensive but there is the reason I am going there. My tuition assitance from the national guard pays it in full. It won't do that with a companies training program. So worst case senario, I get my CDL with no job, but, Have no school loan. And while I attend I'll still have my job, so really this is a no loss chance I'm taking.
I am currently talking to TMC, and Werner, Looking for pre-hire. I know yalls warnings about werner. But, those 2 companies allow me to draw my GI-BIll for up to a year under the "apprentice" thing. Which is alot of extra money a month. IF any of you know of another company that hires rookies, and has that, Please let me know. TMC is obviously the one I am hoping for.
Swift has also excepted me to there school. Lets see if that means they will still hire me after going to an independant school. Again I have seen yalls warnings. But honestly, Not alot of great options for rookie drivers looking to get a bit of learning, experience time.
Soon to be

Alright, well a bit of an update. I just finished week one in driving school. I passed the written test at the dps station and have gotten the Class A permit. MOndey we start driving. Day one is driving this large loop in the city on I35 service road, just to get the shifting down. Tuesday we go into straightline backing.
I have filled out a few apps with the school, for the companies they work with. Swift, TMC, Werner, MLLK, and Stevens. I'm honestly leaning towards werner just because they have a pet policy for company trucks. All the others are saying I would have to lease.Ducks Thanks this. -
Welcome to the forum RS!
Sounds like you're on your way to getting your CDL and a new driving job. That's terrific. I'm glad you're applying with multiple companies. It will give you more options when making your decision. You'll hear good and bad about Werner and all the other companies out there. No matter whom you decide to run with, stick with 'em, hell or high water. Once you get your own truck, you'll REALLY start enjoying being a professional driver.
Good luck to you!RobertSmith Thanks this. -
Just like Gears said, STICK WITH THEM. Get atleast a year in without changing companies and you will be good after that. Once you have that first year of experience in you have a lot more choices and better places to go and work for. I am starting with TMC on monday and I chose them to start out with again since my previous experience was 4 years ago and does not count anymore. Just go through the site here and read about all the companies. There is tons of awesome info on here. Figure out what you want to do division wise, whether it be flatbed, reefer, van, tanker or whatever. There is plenty of places to get started just need to tough it out for one year minimum no matter how rough it is.

Well day 1 of btw done. I tell you what, My clutch leg is shot. Man All day just up and down the service road, shifting up threw the gears, and back down, over and over. Took me the better part of the day to start getting a rythm to it. I look forward to the days of being able to look back at this and laugh.

It's surprising how that 'ol clutch can get to ya isn't it? It can be a bit frustrating but you'll soon get the knack. You'll be surprised how natural it will become for you.
Practice makes perfect, take every opportunity you get to drive.
Thanks for the update and continued good luck! -
