    im 21 yrs old, i have a wife and 2 kids. 5 yr old son and a 3 yr old daughter. Next month i start my training through TDI in Oxford, Al. im very excited. Im hoping to be OTR so i can see the country i love. i know there isnt gonna be much time for my family but we have talked and this is for the best. i will be able to start putting back for my kids college. ill be asking questions and after looking over this site for a few days i can tell there are some very nice people on here who have alot of knowledge to share. thanks for your time, Justin

    Your road is going to be filled with pot holes.

    21 years old ?? Hope you've already got something lined up.

    I've seen a few OTR companies that will hire a 22 year old. Most want 23.

    Insurance dictates what limits the company requires.

    What about 48 year olds? I'm looking into this to finish my working years. Kids are gone. No one but me and the wife. Would REALY like some true advice. been on here for weeks and keep hearing the same stuff about ALL the "STARTER COMPANIES". Is there any one who can lead me in some sort of direction? Live in Central KY.

    Make sure you REALLY do your homework and what the REAL pay will be. Keep searching this forum and youll find the answers and others will help along the way as well. Good luck to all of you.

    It's a coin toss for the "perfect" match, of starter companies.

    48 years old, stable, kids grown. You'll find work easily.

    I'd recommend Watkins & Shepard, or Conway Truckload. While they both have their issues. They offer unique things for the new guy.

    Conway will elevate your pay quicker. It works out to about $5k a year for a few years...if you get the miles.

    Watkins & Shepard will work closer with you while you go through the early stages of your career.

    While Conway (the former CFI) likes to talk about their "family". Watkins and Shepard actually "feel" like family.

    It's a trade off. Faster pay increases vs. Extended guidance.

    If your house is in order and money is not a real issue, by all means go with Watkins & Shepard.

    :biggrin_25514:Thanks alot! I've been looking A Roehl as they hire out of the school I will be going to. I'm not much of a bull####er so I don't want to go to a company that requires or expects a lot of log "fixin'".Do these companies hire recent grad? I WILL be looking into them. Thanks again!

    Both hire recent grads. I suggest using the search function, and taking a look for threads related too both. The current W&S thread is over 350 pages long. It may take you a few days to read it ;)

    ive looked at a few companys and most want 22 or above, if its any count ill be 22 in oct. before my training is over to be exact, so hopefully i wont have to much troule

    I am going to throw this at you. your first year, its gonna suck. It is going to bring you to a whole new level of suck. And the pay, well it is going to redefine suck.

    Once you get past the initial suck fest though, you can do pretty #### good if you make good choices.

    There is a lot of good info on here, have a healthy read before you take any trucking jobs, never leave a truck abandoned, never do a lease, lease purchase, or buy a truck from the company you are working for for any reason what so ever.

    The only acception to this rule is if you are buying a truck from the company that you have been opperating as a company driver, you are familiar with the truck, and you have outside finaning, meaning you have a finance company that is no way shapoe or form affiliated with the company you are pulling for.

    Also, if you drink dont drive. It will be a death sentance for your career.
