The dummy who got in this mess probably would use his jake on ice. :biggrin_2559:

Jumping out of the truck into nice soft snow with a slanted 14 foot ditch to absorb the impact sounds like a good alternative. The sooner you jump the better. Just make sure the truck heads for the other ditch and the explosion won't hurt you.

Believe it or not there was a long period when jake's were not that common. I fact most company rigs were real bare bones. If you had a radio (AM and God help us a 8-track) it was one you installed yourself. In fact alot of us had a box made up with a radio, speakers, etc that you transferred from truck to truck. White trucks (including Fliner) and I believe Mack used a positive ground system so ya had to allow for that too. CB? What the heck's that???

But back to our scenario. Interesting answers but all wrong so far.

So, you are in a CMC Astro that was an old Red Ball truck so it originally had no sleeper on this cabover, but as luck would have it there was one added to it along with the tag axle behind the one drive axle to make it able to haul 36,000 lbs as a tandem used to. You are teaming with someone that before now you have never met and yet are expected to sleep behind.

The roof mounted A/C unit cools just enough to keep a candy bar from melting IF you remove one of the vents and put it inside the unit, close to the evaporator coil. And the roof leaks.

One night while sleeping in the "Coffinbox" sleeper with one vent catching wind and the one on the other side pulling it through the sleeper, your co driver yells. "Wake up, you're gonna want to see this".

Question: Who are you driving for?

Ralph Owens, South Eastern Express (SEX) or Dick Simon?

    Question: What do you do?

Do you Ignore your partner catching a few more moments of slumber before you die? Or do you open the escape door on the sleeper and jump? Or grab the candy bar from the mark IV A/C unit that never worked right and eat it?

I am thinking let the tires on the right side drop off of the edge and use the frame to slide to a stop. but then again I have not figured out what do do any other way. So I guess I'll die.

Ok, here's the deal.... bailing out is not an option 'cause your rig will run over your butt.

Onliest answer is ride her down, Mexican Od and edge the trailer over so the rear wheels start catching snow enough to maybe get back behind you. I went across that curve doing about 85. Did alot of praying. About a mile further I pulled over in a wide spot and spent the next 1/2 hour shaking like a leaf.

The company was Brunswick Petroleum hauling for Shell Oil. The road is Hwy 7 between Saint john New Brunswick Canada and Fredericton through the Canadian Army Base Camp Gagetown. The hill is known as Finnegan Hill and we drove that road daily in all conditions. There are lots of worse places in Eastern Canada. This is what "old school" trucking was. You did what you had to do because there were few other options.

Back then risking your butt was "normal business". Inshore fishermen went out in small boats after lobsters and such in winter with 12 foot waves and some never came back. Loggers/pulpwood cutters waded thru waist deep snow with their chainsaws and cut 4 or 5 cords of wood every day. You did what the job called for even if it scared the crap out of you. But you stood just a little straighter and a little taller when you were done and you looked everybody right in the eye.

    Been there done that.

Weirdest #### feeling losing control of your body. Sitting there shaking so bad, you can't even push the %$## clutch in.

Kinda reminds you who/what is in charge.

    Brain says go...Body says ^%$# you !

    Edit.....

I wonder if there is a medical explanation for that ? Maybe adrenaline over load ?

BTW, if you actually tried this you would quickly become a flaming pinwheel as your rig rolled over and over and over all the way to the bottom of the hill.

No matter how careful you are, how well you plan, there will one day when it's just you and God in that truck.
