There is a point when skill instinct and talent will not make up for putting yourself in a bad situation in the first place.
I would write "Suicide" on the Death Certificate.
What would YOU do???

When I was a green horn I often wondered what I would do when one of these situations like you describe ever came up. Well of course it did come up.I found that what you do is you use every bit of experince you have and you keep driving. When you give up and lock it down that is when you ARE lost.
dancnoone Thanks this. -
So true. Sometimes things "just happen" that makes the outcome better than it would have been if you had given up entirely.

The corner at the bottom is that part that scares me. I have no problem going straight but the curves in the road I always take a tad slower.
I will be hauling 135,000 up and down a very treacherous highway all winter and if I said I wasn't scared ######## about it I would be lying. I look forward to the challenge but the sliding trailer part spooks me.
The stretch of road you are talking about I know. That is a crazy bit of road in the winter. I drove from Miramachi to Fredricton then to Moncton in a crazy snow storm last winter. It was scary enough in the rental, let alone a big rig. -
I would have put it in the ditch at the top of the mountain! That would have safely solved that problem. Why did you gun it going down hill, or were you in reverse and gunned it?

Interesting story with a result that I & everyone else who drives should of known.
Something that was told to me a long time ago by a old hand that simply slipped my mind until reading this story from front to back...
He told me that if I ever find myself in a prediciment, just drive the truck! Don't fight it, do what you can do to control it & drive it. -
just dont overthink the predicament--instinct takes over and saves the day

No; He said now what do you do now... that happened when the rig started to slide forward....

Been alot of "life's little moments" on that stretch of road over the years. Great road for moose, deer and little surprises from the military.
One funny; on the approach to Finnegan you top a rise. On this particular day as I topped it a helicopter flying "nap of the earth" popped up the steep side. Now of course he was a good 100 ft above the road but for that brief second the pilot and I was looking at each other "eyeball to eyeball". Turned out it was Prince Charles' Regiment over there doing training. Never did find out if it was him or not.
