Is there a driving test for the HAZMAT?...And should I apply for the background check then take the test or are they done at the same time?...

Nope theres no driving test, just a multiple choice test 30 questions, you need to get 24 right.

Look at my thread about how to get hazmat...You go online and apply, then go get finger printed, then when you pass the last two things, you go to take the test..

For all you newbies - especially the young guy's with a decent head on your shoulders this might be for you..haha.. I always like to keep a sense of humor unlike many of the angry "old timers" you'll meet or read posts from.. They get super pissed when I say I enjoy holding them up with my slow truck..hehehe..

I was a college student and had made it into the chemistry program at Penn State main campus which is very hard to do.. I had this summer job since my senior year in high school at a steel shop that brought in O/O's to haul the aggregate equipment we produced and the shop owned a few straight trucks & TT's for local shop to shop stuff.. When I was a junior in college I decided to quit school to pursue driving much to the dismay of my amazing parents but they supported me 110% since that was what I wanted to do..

Even though I had a class A, I still had to write a check to a school so I could get hired by an OTR flat/step-deck carrier.. I was gonna start my own trucking company that was gonna be great and nobody could stop me..haha.. One year into OTR I had lost my high school hottie that I had dated for seven years and was engaged to and needed a way out.. I remembered the LTL city drivers that used to run into that shop telling me it was the only way to drive for a living so I applied, applied, and applied again..lol..

When I was 22 I had a little over one year of OTR and had pretty much lost the best thing I had known since I was 16.. CCX called me and I ended up taking the job.. It was going pretty good then the company closed the terminal I was at - I had to move 140 miles to keep my job.. I was glad I did though.. That year I made $82,500 as a line-haul driver here.. Right before the end of last year the terminal I went to when mine closed lost a ton of runs and I had a ton of transfer options with seniority.. Now I'm at the terminal I kinda wanted since day one and will be very close to 90K for 2010.. Money isn't everything but I still have a year or two of night line-haul left in me before I take a cushy city start time that's 8 and the gate..

If you really want to make it in the industry chances are you'll loose some things but can make money and life goes on.. I've moved on very well since those days and owe my current lifestyle and financial freedom to driving a truck and Con-way Freight..

Just bust some balls, have a sense of humor, and keep an eye on your goals and you'll be just fine.. No doubt..

Living in KY we can get by on very very little so even the starter pay puts money in the bank, I think we'll be fine!!!!!!!

Maybe the level of delusion is higher here?

Seriously I think I agree with you. This is seems to be a heavily moderated, and thus kinder and gentler, forum.

It's kind of like my current job, which I'm pretty happy with, in part because all of the other drivers seem pretty happy, and amazingly, all of the O/O's seem very happy. It really does seem to rub off on you.
