hi all im about to start nettts in ri, ( 3rd week of november ) i have so many questions its not even funny.
first maybe i should tell you all about myself, i'm 51 years old and a displaced worker ( job went to mexcio ) after 31 years at the gillette company in boston ( i was a mechanic ) my services where no longer needed. so before unemployment run's out i better get on the stick and learn something new. ( industrial jobs out there now suck, and i don't want to do that kind of work any more )
i always liked to drive ( 2x a year to colorado, did it one time in 34 hours never again, that was STUPID.)
first thing i would like to know is how often you guy's get home. ( this is a major concern for the wife)
second is how hard is it to break into this kind of work i know a lot of companies have pre-hire, and not sure how that really works.
i do plan on doing long haul ( brother in law worked for CRE for many years.) and loved it.
ok my first post is long enough, thanks stephan.
About to break into otr.

First, let me say that Pre-Hire Letters mean squat. Get that in place right away.
Here is the first thing I would recommend you to do. Look at yourself. What is your health like, do you have narcalepsy, require Insulin or take funky narcotic perscription drugs ? If so, you are out right now. Don't even try.
Next, what is your driving history ? What does your H6 say about you ? Speeding tickets, accidents, DUI ? These things could take you out.
How about your Criminal History ? Drug dealer, auto thief ... any level of Theft Crime and you are out.
Most people come out here, say they love to drive and then spin some tale of woe because they were turned down for a job because of THEIR history.
Now if you can get past yourself ... then YOU need to start looking at companies that YOU want to work for. The school will push you towards someplace that probably sucks. So do your own homework. (I'll save you 5 minutes: England sucks)
I did not go with the usual companies for new drivers. I found another place, worked hard to get in there and now am driving Dedicated for a major retailer. I have a small travel area, I work six days and I am making over .38 cpm with Stop Pay, Detention Pay and yadda yadda.
Another driver that was at Orientation with me has a home every night job. He's thrilled.
You can get the job you want but if you think you will have it handed to you at your school or on this board .... not gonna happen.
You may have to go OTR for 6 months to get the job your really want. That's not the end of the world.
You can do this. You are 51 you have plenty of time to work and build a new career with a new employer. Start researching companies and have fun ! -
ok let me reply.
driving record spotless. ( it's right in front of me, had to get it before i enrolled in school
criminal record, no. nothing.
i know this is going to be hard. but im up for the challenge. -
Oh, they won't hire you. You are not exciting enough.
-
gee thanks. lol

That's actually really good.
You can shop some of the non-biggie companies and they may pick you up. It's a difficult sell but every-so-often you hear that someone got on with a small shop and things are good for them.
As you drive about notice the names on the trucks and then google them for more information.
Good luck at school and try to keep it between the barrels.
If I can help you further please let me know. -
thanks capt. like i said i know this is going to be hard to break into. i have list of over a 100 companies that im researching. like i said in my first post bro-in-law drives for CRE. and loves them.
i've been on this forum about 2 hours and read pro's and con's about many big company's. when my time comes to pick a company to work for i know it will be a tough choice to pick the right one.
thanks for your honesty. -
Where you reside has a factor in who you work for !!
Good Luck !! -
Home time - depends on where you run, whether you are OTR, regional, dedicated or local.
You will have to run OTR for at least a year, that seems to be standard before you can look for other jobs. Most are home one weekend in four, maybe more often at times. you will most likely get home for Christmas, and maybe Thanksgiving, but forget other family occasions, its just won't happen.
Ask your wife to join the Ladies Room here and get yapping. We will tell it like it is!
