Hello, I live in TN and I've been looking through the different messages, and haven't seen a clear answer to the question of which is better, going through company paid school or trying to get a grant or loan putting myself through school. Also which is better team or solo. I've also seen names of companies to stay away from but not a list of good companies to start with. What are some good questions to ask those companies before applying. I want to do this since having watched grandparents drive when I was younger, and I don't want to make the wrong decision with wrong company and get burned out on it.
Any advise is very much welcomed. -
Hi; I am new here so I will get my posts in and be able to reply as soon as possible.
I have been checking out several companies and it seems that they all want OTR experience to get you back in. I had some local and 5+ yrs. otr, but the local didn't count for anything when it came to getting back on board to drive. So now I have a 7 yrs. been off the road, and have to start all over again, unless I could find an O/O to go with, or Southern Cal said if I could find a co-driver they could hire, I could come in with that one and go as a trainee or something like that. There is also a website that can help you find a co-driver and it is free. http://www.socalteammatch.com/ My sister and her hubby retired from there last year and loved it, said they were a pretty upfront company....So you all might find some help in this. Have a good run and keep your powder dry.

Thanx for the progress report.
I appreciate that.
If it made you laugh, -----
mission accomplished.
You're the one-millionth poster to ask those exact questions.
How many Big truck truckin' companies have you contacted and asked those questions?
How much effort are you plannin' to "put out" for research time?
Five years with a CDL-A, and no OTR experience at all?
You know you can plan on startin' right from the beginnin' again, right?
Actually, you need to and should want to.
If all you can afford is the cheapest route to a destination, you should wait, save some more, and pay for a better education.

Good info here. I've been thinking about trucking for a long time. I did it for a while back in the late 90's, and hated it. I've no reason to think I won't dislike it now, but when your back is against the wall, and the bills are due, you do what you have to do to make a buck.

If you can go to school DO IT! Ive been driving for just over 2 years. I got on with a loca flatbed company hauling construction materials. It was worth it in the fact that it gave me experience maneuvering the truck in some crazy ways to get in and out of construction sites. Since then Ive been working for the last year and a half for an LTL carrier. Now Im looking to go OTR but nobody seems to be interested in hiring me. The response Ive got so far is always the same......"without OTR experience, you need to got to school before we can hire you". If you can afford school then maybe it will save you the headache Im having.
