Hi, I just finished my first week by myself and I really like McElroy, they are straight and upfront about everything and expect the same out of the drivers. The insurance is up to you there are three different plans and it starts the first of the month after your 90 days. They have all been very nice and helpful. The person that posted something about them being rude and couldn't understand them must have called the wrong McElroy, there are three or four different McElroy trucking companies. Make sure if you call them it is the one in Cuba, Alabama. The pay starts out at .38 cents a mile after training. The training is long but I think it is worth it. First week is orientation and the second is what they call 1st week training and then you go out with a trainer on a truck for four weeks and then you go back to Cuba for another week which is called the final week. During the final week you stay in your own truck on the lot and usally leave out on Thursday on your first run. You will pick up your first run and take it home for the weekend and deliver by 7:00 on Monday morning. They want you at your delivery sight 10 hours early so you can get your 10 hours rest. I am really satisfied with them and would recommend them to anyone.

    Thanks
    Don

Thanks, Overheard. I wish you luck in your employment there.

It all sounds good, and I have just sent them an online application.

What kind of trucks do they use? From the pictures on their website, it looks like they use Macks. I trained on Freightliners. What are the Macks like?

I guess you trained out of Alabama. I live in Virginia, up near Washington, so I think I will be training out of North Carolina. I have no problem with the length of training, I think it will help in the long run. Are their trainers good?

Again, best of luck to you.

I spoke with Overheard on the phone last week. He does not get online much now that he is on the road. He might overlook your post by the time he gets online. I would shoot him a PM that way he will be sure to see it. If I remember right he said the only Macks are now used in training or in the yard. Don't remember what he said they went to. He did tell me that he had a great trainer and he was real pleased with the company as a whole. Did not mean to hijack your post, just not sure if he will see it when he gets back on. Maybe down the road he will be able to get online while out on the road.

NOTARPS is right they only use the Macks in training and have Internationals on the road. They just bought the South region of Path and have their Eagles now from there southern fleet. I try to check for new post every weekend when I am home if I can find the time, so much to do when I am home, but I will do my best to help as much and when I can.

    Thanks

    Don

The trucks are governed at 65 mph and right now I average between 2000 and 2500 miles a week which is all I care for right now. I've talked to other drivers that were getting around 3000 miles a week.

Thanks for all the info, Overheard. I spoke with Diane in Cuba last week and they sound interested in hiring me. right now I work as a school bus driver and am thinking that, for various reasons, I need to finish out the school year. However, that may change.

Are you still happy with McElroy?

Worked for McElroy for 30 days. They gave me a truck with over a million miles on it. Couldn't get it over 55mph. It rode like a stagecoach and forget about climbing a hill. When you get off for the weekend, it is for 24 hrs. because they expect you to have 11 driving hours available when you off load. You'll be hauling a potpourri of stuff from Venore, TN thrown on your truck so that you'll have to re-stack it by hand. Your mileage won't match theirs either. When you've finally had enough, They'll bad mouth you on your DAC. I suggest you find a different company.:biggrin_25510:

I have only talked to one driver that was not happy with them. I was in a truckstop in VA. He said he did not get home much, but he lived in PA. Not even in their hiring area. Not sure if he moved there later or not. I have talked with a lot of their drivers. All had nothing, but good to say about them. They are the only company I know of with so few complaints. Counting you that makes only 2 complaints I have ever heard about them.

  11. I got my pre-hire in the mail yesterday. I talked to Diane two weeks ago. They seemed really nice. I just have to make sure I want to do flat beds. Home every week would be nice.
