If u have the potential to gross $2000.00 a week in a company truck thats great. I have to run loose leafs to do that with my company, and thats what I will continue to do until it becomes impossible. Only had 1 log violation since 1994 running this way and one accident. I'll do what it takes for my family, simple as that. If you can't tell when ur to tired to drive u r a moron.
grimesjm1 Thanks this. -
I am going to speculate as to why the major companies are for this.
The big companies are all governed around 63 MPH or less. This is to save fuel, but will sometimes cause a load to have to be delivered a day later. Small companies and O/Os run at a higher speed, and are able to make JIT deliveries much quicker. With EOBRs, you have to run the speed limit or less to keep from getting a speed violation on your log. This will force everyone to slow down to the big carriers speed. This gives the big carrier an advantage, as they move freight on large volume, and can make less per truck.
Many of the smaller companies will go out of business or be taken over by the big guys. O/O's and companies that won't slow down or run legal HOS will be put out of business.
The EOBRs will also save the large companies money in the long run by not having to keep a lot of log auditors on the payroll, as the computer program will keep up with HOS.
That's it, plain and simple. Over a period of time, the big guys feel they will get bigger, and the others will go under.wildbill123, lilillill, Emulsified and 2 others Thank this. -
I really had not thought very much about this. But control also seems to be a factor.Injun Thanks this.

Stranger, that is along the same line as my theory--that the ulterior motive is to put ALL small carriers out of business. Kinda the same way Waste Management came into town in Grand Rapids, MI back in the late nineties and convinced the city council to pass some BS ordinance that all waste haulers had to have a ridiculously huge liability insurance policy--effectively removing competition from the small haulers who couldn't afford it.

well I hope it backfires on the big carriers in one way. If all of a driver's hours are being tracked by computer, then there should be no reason NOT to pay by the hour for every hour worked. And truckdrivers should be removed as exceptions to the fair labor laws with regard to pay.
truckerdave1970, zentrucking, wildbill123 and 1 other person Thank this. -
I will wonder if they will ever look into the removal of the exemption.
-
And that's the issue in a nutshell, a lot of drivers think that way ...
Unfortunately, many of those drivers may not be as good a driver as you and many others - and have no problem being a menace on the road in the name of money. -
Hey drivers. Follow the money. Who owns quallcomm, xata, people-net ect. Get to the bottom of this. Find out whos invested in these companies and you will find the truth about this bill. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SAFETY. Big truck crashes are at an all time low. Insurance compaines have more to do with less crashes than the government ever could. Its truly time for O/O'S to unite. Stop the FUSSING and get with ooida find out what you should start doing. Your jobs/lives are a stake here. Lets stop arguing and fight this with passion.

Welcome to trucking as i know it in Australia.
We dont have an on board system, we have gantry mounted cameras on the hiways that log licence plates and trip times and etc..
Our log books are also issued by the DOT and are numbered.
and guess what, the major carriers are walking all over us because they can have certian exemptiosn that small guys cannot afford....
Sound similar much?CivilWerks and lilillill Thank this.
