You need to determine where the static was coming from. If it's coming from the vehicle(s) then you might be able to improve it by grounding and getting your power from a cleaner source. If it's coming from those high voltage lines you're four-wheeling under, you're not going to be able to do anything about that. If it's from atmospheric conditions, you're not going to be able to do anything about that either. Try unplugging your antenna and see if there's still a lot of noise in your receive(do not transmit). If there is, then you need to wire up the power supply to your radio better. I had a truck that had a lot of electrical noise, and I used a piece of shielded co-ax to wire it straight to the battery, and it cleaned up quite a bit. I used the center conductor for the positive and the outer for the negative. You need to fuse AT THE BATTERY on the positive AND NEGATIVE if you do this.
