how do you get a pre-hired? Old but new to trucking.

I have a job at this time, in the health care field. I want to come back to trucking, but was wondering if there is a way to get a pre-hire, so if I go with a company training program, I won't find my self coming home and no job waiting for me.????Like do you let the trucking company know you need something in writing? I am not sure how it goes. When I was driving back in the day, jobs were plentiful......oh me oh my...any advice would be helpful I am sure. LT

 

I want to thank both of you for your thoughtfulness, you made me look at the bigger picture. Yes, I had 6 yrs otr experience, 8 yrs. ago. And your right, if I take the selfish route and drop everything I have accomplished in this past 8 yrs. to "go back" to trucking it is not going to be like I remember it. I would be worse in debt and putting myself into a situation that I would most likely look on it and say, "did I do that???" There were so many things I loved about truckin, I drove mainly solo and made my way through the hard knocks, by the grace of God and some few good truckers that told me what and how and where and I listened. So those are the memories I carry around with me. And when the health care field gets waaaayyyy too much on me, I remember the life I left out on the road. Ha....but I know, I am who I am, and I know who I am.......so I thank you for reminding me, that life is more about all the people around me, and not just me. I have a grown son I help, some MR/DD (mentally retarded and developmentally disabled)clients that need me to be there for them (in the good times and bad) and I have a life. But I will keep in touch through the forum, and anyone I can help I would be glad to. See yall on the flip side, Lydiat

 

Hi Karen; I work with mentally retarded and developmentally disabled adults. I get peed on, spit on, slapped, kicked and screamed at, I have gotten chased at times, but I know, that we-the staff- are all they have between the institution they came out of into residential home settings, and going back to the institutions, for most don't have families to care for them. I love taking care of my "little angels", but yes, I miss being otr and the good parts of it. I fought for my cdl and my haz-matt indorsement, a few "bad" trainers, and a lot of the good ole boys that taught me the right way.....I learned more in 6 yrs. than most did in 20. One day I will be in a financial situation to where I can go truckin again, and I will relish the moment. but for now, I would have it rough, coming back and starting as a newbie. I don't ming starting as a newbie, it is a laughable thing, I'm still grinning about it, but if I wait till spring or there abouts, and then jump in and go for it, I think I will come out ahead. You are so right about "burn out" and sometimes you have to get away from reality, and then you have driving. {grinning as I say so} but it is in my blood and it'll keep a little longer.....God bless you and keep you safe from all harm, keep it on the pavement and inbetween the lines, Lydiat

 

P.s. I still have my cdl-a and I will get my haz-mat again......oh me oh my..... I was daddy's girl........

 

P.S.S. I get 9.34 an hr. after I hit the 7 yr. mark....we don't get regular raises cause we get what the state has left over after they give raises to state employees, but we make it. I've been there 7+ yrs. and it is a shame the folks that don't get raises, but we are dedicated, amen. {i am smiling as I type this.}
