Thanks for the service guys! If you can stay past 20 do it! But DO NOT waste your GI Bill on a driving school unless it's a trade or community college! NOT on a drivers mill. That's a waste of the BI Bill!
I'm OlD Army and been out since 75, I got RIFFED when Nam ended just after my first 5 year reup! I have no idea whatmeans but if there is anyway you can cross train for a new MOS that the Navy needs do it, stay in as it still pretty much bites the big one out here! Too many Vets are getting burnt by some of these "service friendly" companies and those that used their BILL really lost out. Don't believe the hype that there is "Money in them thar hills" in trucking! There isn't! In a few years as it settles down and we maybe get a POTUS that has his Hotel out of his Alpha things' will get better. Just don't dive into this cess pool yet! Good luck!

Rollover,
HYT means High Year Tenure.... as a First Class Petty Officer the OP is required to transition at 20 years. It goes by paygrade.... PO1 (E6) can do 20 years....

oknavy,
Were you able to get your degree while active? The GI Bill (whether Montgomery or Post 9/11) is a valuable benefit..... I have never been an advocate of using it to supplement income....well the Montgomery as you can't use the Post 9/11 for this....
Whatever your decision.... best of luck to you and thanks for your service.

Never got my degree, was having too much fun on ship (USS PYRO, USNS Guadalupe, USS Jarrett, USS Devastator, USS Fort McHenry). I'm still trying to decide on using the bill for for appretinceship, or saving it for down the road when I have have the travel bug out of my system. Dad was Army so all i've ever knowen was traveling and not staying anywhere more then a few years.

Save it for use later on.... Just my .02.

Thanks for your service!
I came out of the Army with several years of experience, no school, and right into the right seat. I did have to go thru training period, which was good because driving in the Army I never had to do a Log book, so it was a learning experience. I lived in my truck for the next eleven years, when I finally got an apartment( being single, everything went into storage when I retired) Fast forwarding, I now drive for a very small company, they treat me great pay me well, and I drive a very decent outfit.
I wish you good luck on your future journeys, safe miles and good health.

With a GI Bill, I would consider training at a community college. The level of training is better.
Then once you have that certificate there are hundreds of companies to chose from.
The recruiters will come to class chasing you.
Have you considered working civil service? You have veteran 5-point preference and could get any great M-F dayshift job with excellent benefits. Plus you need to be near a base to take advantage of your many benefits.

As I have been round and round with VA over this I have way more experience dealing with this than I care to have.oknavy Thanks this. -
Please explain your experiences. I am interested. I too dealt with the VA and experienced too much frustrations with just getting my payment while using "Top-up".

Condo, i wouldn't be able to handle a M-F 9-5 job, either it would kill me, or I'd go nuts and kill them!! After being on so many ships, and dealing with the military bs the LACK of stress would do me in , besides my wife wouldn't know what to do with me home every night, she'd proabley kill me.
