Dump Truck O/O info

You can make money with a dump truck. 1st you need money to survive until you get paid from your billing. Some companies pay fast & others wait until they're paid.

Working many years as an Operations Manager in a large grading & underground utility company we only paid Junes work in July after we ourselves were paid from our submitted draws. Ask about payment & you want no later than 30 days. Find out when they submit their draws if this is how they pay. Most draws are no later than the 20th of the month to be paid within 15 days.

Spend a few bucks with an attorney understanding the laws in your area pertaining to applying a lien for non payment. Don't be afraid or a "friend" when your hand is forced in slapping a lien on a job. Windows are small for this action. Most will ante up just with a threat because they don't want the GC or developer knowing they don't pay their bills.

Last but not least from the hire you'll negotiate "By The Load" or "By The Hour" rate. Make sure you document & get signed at the end of the day by their rep your corresponding paperwork. Give them a copy on the job & fax one with your billing. BILL DAILY.

Also put a disclaimer on your daily load count/hour sheets that that they sign & get a copy, "You are not responsible for damage to curbs or private driveways/roadways." You'll be amazed at the places some will want your truck.

I been driving dumps for about 4 years and just bought my 1st truck about 3 months ago. Just make sure you buy a heavy spec truck. What ever you do dont buy a tractor that was turn into a dump truck. A tractor is not heavy enough.

AMEN! We used to run into that all the time in FL, road tractors and dump trucks, two entirely different animals. In my experience, you can do alot to make a road tractor look like a dump chassis, but the old 8LL never lies.

The main action for dumps is in louisiana, you'll need a camper and alot of patience, but there is money down there. I have even heard of a few folks advancing fuel money

 

I know hear in upstate NY dump trucking is in the toilet! The rates that the quarries and black top plants want to pay don't even cover daily expenses let alone truck payments, maintenance, and insurance. We've pulled ours off the jobs. We can go broke sitting at home. No need to work all day long and go broke. Its very cut throat here. If we wont do it for the $hi+ rates someone else will. Well they can have it. No sense in working for free or even worse loosing money at the end of the day. Do your research! Have you ever driver dump truck before? If not I would get a company driver position first for a year or two to see what its like. If you do buy your own the others are right, speck it heavy. Around here most have 20,000 front axles and 46,000 rears. 18s and 44s will work. Get at least an 8LL trans or the 18 speed. A 15 speed will work. Dont get a 9,10, 13. They dont have a low enough low hole for off road.

 

I got a 13 on my Mack it is a Mack tranny with 4:30 gear ratio in the rears. Its low enough for me. I dont stock i go to job sites 80% of the time. I have been in deep soft stuff before and Lo is lo enough.

I'm is SE Pa and we are staying some what busy. I haul out of the local quarry all the stone is paid by the ton but all hot rock is hourly at 77/hr but the quarry keeps 2/hr so you only see 75/hr.
