I started another thread last night, apparently the Virgin Mobile plan IS unlimited, but it is also throttled from day one. It piggybacks on Sprint, but Sprint is not giving it full speeds, roughly 1/4 to 1/2 the speeds that a Sprint device gets hitting the same tower. That's ok for basic web surfing, but for gaming or an Xbox, performance is going to be very poor in most places. So, the $40 price tag does come with some compromises.

    Atm means at the moment.
And no that's no hacking what you did. Verizon used to have tethering locked out then offering to unlock it for a fee on smartphones. That's when we would flash a hack to get it without paying that stupid fee. I guess now they offer a program that makes a wifi hotspot, which I guess is essentially the same thing as tethering, just wireless. Guess I'm behind the times.

Ok I bought the droid 2 and the internet is preety fast when tetherd to a laptop. Watching video clips, like on youtube, sucks and you have to let a video load for about a min before viewing or it will constantly skip. Other than that I love my phone.

Odd, it should be faster than that. My devour could hit 300k+ tethered with good signal on verizon. I noticed that some of these smart phones get worse signal reception that a simple flip phone from the same company.

Well, since wireless internet (on the cell phone) is all about shared bandwidth...if you are in a truck-stop with 50 other users all trying to watch U-TUBE or anything else that uses tons of bandwidth, it will be slower than if you are in the middle of nowhere, with a good signal....and no other users on the same tower.

I'm surprised that's the best you're getting. My home cell tower gives my verizon modem just under a meg on speed tests on 3G and like 40k on 1x. Must be a bottleneck in the tethering.

That was KB, not Kb. Around 3Mb/s. I saw it break 400k once. But it never lasts long as the Devour is junk.

Ah ok. I hate this bits/bytes crap. Wish the companies would just pick one to end my confusion.

Yeah, it's like pennies to dollars only instead of base 100 it's base 1024. Never ends either. I've got a 10Mbit line at the house and got all confused trying to figure out why we were only getting 1.2MB download speed. Then it went up to 2MB and I was glad I never said anything to the cable company.
