Hello, I have been thinking about a possible career in the transportation industry for some time. I do however, happen to have a boo-boo on my record concerning 3 class a misdemeanors all resulting from an incident or more correctly-one night.
The incident involved a bar fight where I ended up assaulting 3 other patrons during a scuffle. I'll spare you any unnecessary details but basically I was the one that ended up going to jail.
This happened about 2 years ago. Aside from this incident my record is
entirely clean. This offense shows up as a single 4th degree assault-a class a misdemeanor in my state. I opted for the plea bargain dropping the charges down to a single 4th degree assault instead of 3. Do you think this will hinder any chance of gaining employment, considering it involves both alcohol and violence? My suspicions say that this will be a non-starter with most companies.
Thank you
The oft-repeated criminal history question.

You never know till they say no. I can assure you most companies have lots worse records hired on. If you get an interview, and they bring it up, just be charming, and honest. Don't volunteer too much, just get the facts out.
"Trust me..." Apply to every company you think would be best for you, don't lower your standards, and don't worry about this issue at all. The job interview will make up for a past transgression a lot of times. -
Adolfus, I'm surely not the best person to chime in here, but here goes. First of all, when you say a "career in the transportation industry", I assume you mean as a driver. Well I checked a a listing of national carriers and their respective hiring requirements. They're showing a column for "felony" convictions, with entries ranging from 1 year old, to never. With that as a guide, I would think that your misdemeanors could hinder your chances with some companies, but not prevent employment all together. Just be prepared to address this issue during interviews, and more importantly, to explain why it won't happen again. The fact that all these misdemeanors are linked to a single incident rather than spread over time is a mixed blessing at best. And needless to say, the passage of time will help. Good luck.

Thanks for your advice. Thank you both for the advice. I'm a hell of a hard worker and although I have this stain on my record it is not entirely characteristic of my normal character. I don't think of myself as a criminal haha! I'm sure even criminals don't think of themselvs as criminals. Anyhoot, I will apply and see what they have to say, worse that's going to happen is I'll get denied.
Take it easy guys. -
if that is all you have and it's that old then you won't have a problem just don't try to hide it and be up front and honest about it. heck we all make mistakes. a few of us make more than others.

you arent kidding about that. our names arent jesus or god therefore we arent perfect. -
Your driving record will probably matter more than a record with no felonies, even with a felony some only go back a few years. Find some
good companies drivers reccomend in the forum, then go to thier website
to find "driver qualifications". That section usually lists requirements.I do
not know anyone except Jesus Christ who has'nt made a mistake. As a driver you might even get a ticket one day just trying to park and sleep
when you are dead dog tired.I once had a company tell me "don't rob any
banks or kill anyone and I can always have a job driving for them". -
very well put jackrabbit
