I recently graduated a cdl school that used only 10 speeds. I have been doing some driving for a farm while waiting for my orientation day to come around. All the trucks on the farm have thirteen speeds and i have trouble with them. Upshifting is okay but shifting them down is a real pain. I am use to using the addition method to know when to downshift ex: 1+5=6th gear. Any avice on the timing of a 13 speed would be greatly appreciated. Other people I've talked to about simply say don't split and drive it like a 9 speed. I don't want to do this because somewhere down the road(maybe years) the question could com up if I can drive a 13 speed. Any help or advice would greatly be appreciated.

My advice would be do learn to drive them all. The next company you go to may be all super 10's. You may also get a KW with an 8 in it. Learn to be versatile. Get you one of those dry erase markers and draw the shifter pattern on the windshield right in front of you. This way you can pay attention to the road and still be able to figure out your shifting. Good luck to you.

The biggest issue to deal with is the location of 6th gear, since it is not located where it is on a 10 speed.
For the splitting of gears it will split at half the rpm you would normally use between gears. So if you normally shifted at 500 rpm increments you will now do so at 250.

Go find a 6X4 and try it.... the 13 speed will be easy compared to that.

I had almost the same situation...I had only trained on and driven 10 speeds, but eventually the company put me into a KW with an 18 speed. I was extremely worried, but I watched some of the youtube vids, got in and tried it, and by the 3rd mile or so, I was shifting it like I had been doing it all along. Once you start doing it, it will come naturally quickly.

18 speeds are just a 13 speed that you can split in the bottom range for the most part.. I droive an old Mack that was a 13 speed and they had removed the pin so that it could be split in low range too.. it worked anyways

13 speed, once learned, you'll never want anything else. I only watched the first video, so don't know if the others showed it, but you don't need to split the high side in every gear. What I did, and it depends on load, was to shift with the splitter on the low position, until I got to eighth. Once I had the rpms up there, I'd split to the high position. You could do that with a load as well, but your negating the advantage of a 13 then. :biggrin_25525:
