Steel Pistons

Usually they use steel pistons for higher HP rating, not sure about CAT (I will know this evening), but for example Volvo use aluminium pistons in D12A-C engines rated lower 400 hp, but if I reprogram PCM to 420 ore 460 hp steel pistons must be used, becouse aluminium pistons may easily be toasted climbing a hill. So let me check Cat pistons interchangebility...

Do you have Cat ET? Do you know your PCM password? how will you change output rating?

 

Well, I asked my friend and he says, that engine block is the same, but different cylinder liners and they may have different bore 137 ore 140 mm, but if pistons fit you can use them, but they have different weight and use change all 6 pistons+rods....

But IHMO, you cant change HP rating on your 3406B and no reason to put 3406E parts into old engine...

 

Cat ET isn't going to do much for a "B" mechanical motor.

 

Mechanical pumps is fogotten art for me.... Well, I see B engines on bulldozers, excavators, but not on road. You need Euro-II rated engine minimum to drive to Europe... So it is really fogotten art...

Anyway you cant change Horspower of this engine and no reason to put more expemcive, heavier steel pistons....

 

The HP is easier to change on this motor than any electronic engines. Just a few turns of the screws and you have it...or if a person really wants to build power they can go after turbos, injectors, fuel pump, and many other things.

 

You'll need the complete rotating assembly of a 3406C or 3406PEEC engine to do what you're looking for. The rods, pistons and crank are different between these engines, but interchange between the blocks.

 

and what bore? 137 ore 140 mm? Cylinder liners are interchangeble, and you can change displacement and compression ratio. and do not forget that engines with higher boost presure usually are of lower compresion ratio to avoid pinging (yep, diesel engines pings too!!!).

 

If you was just talking putting a E piston in a B motor it won't work. IIRC, the wristpin is a different size and also in a different place on each piston. The E piston would be sticking out the top of the block at TDC. I may have this backwards, so someone correct me if I'm wrong.

What serial # do you have and what kind of HP are you wanting?
