Are any of you guys independant truckers? Both my father and uncle were some of the "Last of the American Cowboys". When I get the money for a truck and I'm old enough for my CDLs and to drive out of state, I'd like to become an independant. I know it does nothing for my retirement, but I'd like to carry on the family tradition. Any good rigs I should look at? I'd like to have a 1987 Peterbilt 359. (Thats what my dad drove).

The 359 in my opinon is the best truck ever built but truck that old you better know how to work on it. Go take a mo diesel mechanic program at the local tech school or something. A truck like that you almost have to be independant as most sompanies won't lease on a truck hat old. I'v been looking for one to restore myself.
I used to be independant. It's a good way to go but you REALLY need to know the industry and you have to have alot f money behind you. And you have to deal with slow paying or NON paying brokers etc. It's alot of risk -
I really like the ol' 359. My dad's truck was quite memorable. If you've seen it you probably remember it. It was hott pink with blue pinstripes. They gave my dad hell about the color until he got up in their face. He's a big dude, 6'0 330. ####. His handle was Cash Money, like my forum name. We always used to drive to Florida.
If I dont get the 359, I might try to go for a Mack CH600. That's what my uncle has. He owns a small construction company. Aside from the 359, I think this is also one of the best trucks built also.
I dont really want to work for a company. Its not my thing. I want to own my on truck. I can put away some money for now to help along with that. I cant remember my dad having any broker problems, but then again, that was in the 90's.
I'm 16, and that means that I have a lot of time to think about this, but this is what I want to do. I think if I start saving my money now, I could have a decent truck by the time Im 21. Thanks for the help.
