Don't take this personal... I'm pointing out that someone said a Mack isn't any harder to work on than a Pete... the photos show otherwise.

I never mentioned an IHC, either. All the 'aero' trucks are a PITA to get at the engines.

I never mentioned computers nor did I comment on the competency of mechanics.

An older Western Star (with the Heritage cab) or Freightliner Classic 132 BBC is even easier to access the engine than a long hood Pete or KW...

What I am saying is #1... aero trucks have compromises... one is serviceability. I do a lot of my own work so I prefer a truck that's easy to work on. #2...post-'01 engines are a lot harder to service than pre-emission engines... that's a fact. That's another reason I don't own one...

If you don't mind paying big bucks to have your engine serviced then it doesn't matter how tuff the engine is to service...

I'm a simple man... I like simple trucks.

I gave up doing the majority of my own work on my trucks a few years ago , 2 reasons

    1) Found out there is more to life than spending 50% of my life behind the wheel and the other 50% under the hood.

    2) I have some lucrative big $ contracts , specialized and time sensetive , customer states in contract , POWER EQUIPMENT cannot be more than 3 MODEL YEARS old. So every 3 years its a new Tractor and mine gets sold , traded or used to replace 1 of my other tractors.

Anyhow enough on the pros / cons of whats better , OP asked opinions and he got quite a few informative ones from different points of view.

i've owned 379 short hoods and classic xl's with n-14's and to me the Mack is just as easy to work on and I've turned a lot fewer wrenches on it than any other truck

Hello again, i just got back from a 2 week missionary trip to the philippines and came back to my old blog to see what was posted. All very interesting comment to say the least. I did not purchase the 2001 Mack as of yet. It is still available, I was going to wait for a few posted comments maybe purchase when I got back. I did talk to the dealer about the truck it is a consignment truck and They did change out the cam around 700.000 miles. according to the work order there was a coolant leak between the cylinder sleeve and the engine block on piston #5 they did a overhead special and pulled 4 liners. They installed main bearings, pistons, rods, and bearings and torqued. tested injectors, rocker arms, jake brake heads, engine brake installed spacers, intalled oil pump, intake and exhaust manifolds hoses,etc... anyway the bill was over $10,000
So my question is, Is it better to buy a truck with 700,000 which has had no major work or buy one which has had major work done already at the same price around 25,000. They only gurantee any parts they replaced not any other parts so there is a warrant issue. I would have to purchase another warranty for say the transmission. Ok any comments would be appreciated once again. Thanks for all the comments I do appreciate all the info. Jerseycowboy

Hello Mack fans, I was wondering if the 427 is a better motor then the 460 the 460 is an 01'18 speed and the 427 is an 01' 13 spd Which is the most reliable and best all around motor? Anyone have experience with them? Thanks

Which 460 Mack makes several straight 460, 460E, 460XT, 460P the XT is the rarest and most wanted 500hp and 1800lbs of torque the P will put out 487 Peak power and the 460 E is the weakest pulling, a 427 will out pull it and the 427 has a better torque curve than any of the 460, I have a 01 427 with a fuller 13 its a good set up for me the motors are the same except for different software files and some of the 460's will have a wastegated turbo, I have heard of people having more issues with 460's than 427's headgaskets problems come to mind

I own a 460 now. But i could not feel a power diff. in the 460 and 427. I run with alot of trucks out of the qaurry with the 427s. I can barley pass them. So i dont even know why they make a 460??

I'm pretty sure it is a 460E with a 18 and the other is a 427E Do they make different 427 as well? I like the mack trucks they are comfortableand seem to ride nice and have room. I just want to get a good solid reliable truck. I have looking for a few months now and trying to weight everthing pros & cons. I'm still confused hahah I'm picky and its is like trying to find a woman you want to marry, if you pick the wrong one your going to pay for it. So I'm trying to use wisdom and be cautous as well.
