WHEN GOING UNDER THESE OVERPASSES I WOULD ALWAYS LOOK FOR SCRATCHES OR ANYTHING THAT MIGHT TELL ME A SWIFT DRIVER HAS BEEN THERE BEFORE ME SO I KNOW I WON'T FIT.

Is that the best you can do?

Seems to me this driver did what anyone would have. The structure is clearly marked 13'6". I have never had any trouble clearing a 13'6" structure regardless of which company I worked for. 13'6" structures don't lower themselves because of what name is on the wagon.

A local resident says 3 to 5 trucks each week get caught by this bridge...that is on a marked truck route. I wonder how many of those 3 to 5 each week are Swifts? Not too many, or we'd have heard about it by now from Safety.

I always thought the posted height is the minimum. That would account for the slope of the arches. Maybe they do it differently there, but that would be stupid and useless. Knowing the maximum clearance....duh?

I never trust the clearance when the sign posts less than 14'. Better safe than sorry.

There are a few bridges that I will come to a complete stop and crawl through, even though I've been under them safely lots of times.

The railroad trestle in Gordo, AL on US-82 comes to mind--it's marked 13'6". I've seen drivers zip through there like it wasn't even there. All it would take is for that trailer to bounce one time... or have a leveling rod that's not quite adjusted right and, rriipp.... like a can of sardines.:biggrin_2559:

Here is the quote from Brockton News.

"Bastis said he sees trucks getting stuck under the Court Street or Centre Street bridges three to five times a week."

Something is seriously wrong with the signs, they are stating that 3 times a week a truck get's stuck under the bridge, this should be a sign to the governing body of the town. The problem is with drivers however more on the city or the owners of the said bridge.

I don't understand how they can have a sign saying 13'6" in the dead centre and 11' on the shortest side. Should it not read 11' or even possibly 12'.

Here in Canada on the 400 highway Barrie bound it tells drivers to stay in centre lane due to low arched bridges.

I have seen signs stating 13'6" and my trailer was 13'5" I stopped and got out I had no room to clear the bridge. I had to dump air on my drives and trailer wheels and I still barely squeezed through. I was also considering on letting air out on my drives.

From what I understand when they re-pave the road they do not change the sign on the bridge height. I guess at 60mph we should be able to judge the bridge height.

    It's a scam!!!

They leave it as it is so they can issue high dollar revenue tickets to unsuspecting driver's. And the tow agency get's to cash in on the high dollar tow bills which I'm sure the city may be getting a percentage of!!!

I have been under that bridge alot and you have to drive in the middle of the road straddling the yellow line +/- one foot or you will hit it. alot of the time cars will more over but some times they don't. I have dragged my trailer but never got stuck.
