Your per diem is a tax deduction right? So I don't think you can claim it as an income. Just like you can't claim your deductions for dependents as income.

I'm not a tax guy so I could be wrong.

Please tell us the benefits of Butlers per diem. And does Butler charge any fees for the per diem? Like a few cents a mile or anything?

Can you claim per diem as income?

Yes and no, when you want to make a purchase that your income comes into play, yes you claim that as income, because well it is. At the end of the year when you file taxes no you do not claim that as income, because if you did then they would tax you on it.

I guess the benefits to the per diem is that it does put more money in your pocket up front, sure at the end of the year then you get a w-2 and it shows you made $35,000 to say you know you really made $55,000 and of that the government did not get to touch $20,000 dollars of it, that is pure bring home.

We at Butler do not charge a fee for the per diem.

I hope I have helped answer some questions if not I will Keep trying!

And for those of you that are glad I am posting a job, were always looking for good drivers, I have found 1(you know who you are) and always looking for more.

.21+.09 per diem +.02 Safety bonus =.32 per mile is how I saw it broke down on the Butler advertisement. If a driver for some reason does not get the safety bonus (most companies will always find a reason not to pay). so now the driver is down to driving for .21 per mile and .09 cents per mile per diem. I could be wrong but my accountant says it is now 52.00 dollars per day per diem allowance for OTR drivers. But either way you look at it, $36.00 or $52.00 per diem allowance per day, that per diem is allowed to an OTR driver as an annual tax write off by the IRS. So in reality Butler is only paying a driver .21 cents per mile and a possibly another .02 cent per mile if the meet all safety requirements, based on its own advertisement. The other couple of things you failed to mention is that
#1.-That .09 cents per mile being paid to a driver in per diem can not be claimed as taxable earned income, and That will have an effect on your social security benefits.
#2.- What is the administration fee that Butler is going to charge each driver who accepts this. The usual fee is .02 cents per mile.

Look, This is a message I would like to put out to all drivers, Be very careful and WARY, of any company that is trying to use per diem as a part of the pay per mile. THAT per diem is yours if you drive 1 mile or 600 miles a day. As long as you are an OTR driver it is yours.

It is not an income. I think the only way the 0.09 could be considered an income is if the $0.09 added up to more then the per diem allowed. In that case the overcharge would be taxed as income.

Are you saying a driver will make $55,000 a year with this per diem plan? That's just over 3300 miles a week for 52 weeks a year at $0.32 cpm.

The $20,000 extra due to the per diem seems like a very inflated number. At 52 dollars a day its impossible, $58 its 344 days away from home(then you would be short of the $55,000)

And the per diem is something the OTR driver would get whether or not he is enrolled in the per diem cpm plan.

Although I feel confident with my info I am not a tax expert. I do know enough about math to see the numbers don't really add up.

I ask you to reread the Butler advertisement again because the mileage pay that you broke down is wrong, go to our website at www.butlertransport.com and you can see the actual breakdown. I will also ask you to reread my post about the admin fee for per diem, do to the fact that I do state if Butler charges or not. Both cases are simple proof that you are not reading everything and retaining the information before you decide to rant about it, which can lead to all kinds of problems.

You know the whole per diem thing is a gigantic crazy ##### mess and whom ever thought of it in the first place, well i think we all just need to go and thank them(sarcasm). Is it a perfect system, no its not, but nothing really is.

This is the seek employment section, NOT a section for squabbling of per diem and driver pay. We have plenty of those threads on the forum.

Don't you think drivers should be informed about a company or the style of pay they offer? I thought this was a website for truckers but I guess I was wrong.
