I am looking at a 1985 freightliner with a 3406B in it, their is oil near the manifold & all down the passenger side of the motor to the oil pan & to the rear of the motor towards the cab.
Do 3406bs leak that much oil usually?
the owner was talking about that the oil filters on these are notorious for leaking is that true?
thanks,
TM

Without seeing it I can only guess, if it's above the manifold it could be as simple as valve cover seals, could also be turbo oil tubes incoming & return, but they are other possibilities also, but when you look at it again remember oil or any fluid will not run uphill or blow forward, look above and forward of the residue. I've never had an issue with oil filters leaking, very good motors.truckingman Thanks this.

It looks like the source in pic #4. That breather must have a bad grommet into the valve cover, or it is plugged and the blow by is pushing oil out there. The oil on the air compressor looks like it could be coming from the power steering hose leak.
As was mentioned, it will blow/run down and back.
A real good steam cleaning could wipe the slate clean and you may be able to narrow it down closer.

I just rebuilt my b model and have anoil leak or two on it but none that I saw in those pics looked like trouble. The breather in the top of the valve cover was bad about stopping up and causing to much crank case preasure and would cause some o-rings and gaskets that have hardened with age to seep some oil.

I agree, start with a good engine degrease and wash (should do weekly),pic.#3 valve cover & jake boxes need new seal (cheap and easy to fix),pic.#4 clamp appears to be missing from breather, I would replace breather and get new clamp,pic.#5 power steering leaking, not sure where, possibly hose but would change filter anyway, pic#6 possibly acc. drive gasket, keep it washed and don't worry about it (a ##### to change). These are good old motors and deserve better treatment than this ones been getting. Good luck, hope this helps.truckingman Thanks this.

I had the same thing going on. The first thing is to replace the blow by breather 46$ at most stores. I also went to the dollar store and bought their degreaser and put it in a pump sprayer. Spray the motor down then hand skrub it down. I also put some high temp gasket maker on with a small paint brush around the gaskets that I could get to. Let it sit for 24hrs then go and buy some cat yellow paint and there you go.
The plus of painting the motor over again is to find the leaking areas easier.truckingman Thanks this. -
thanks guys for the info the owner wasn't willing to negotiate on the price so now I am looking for another truck

It makes me feel better to see a clean engine on a truck I am looking to buy. It at least "looks" like the owner cared for it. If they can't clean it up to sell it even, maybe it would be better to look elsewhere.
Happy hunting!!
