Well we are down until monday because the truck is in the shop. I figured I would take the time I have to give everyone an update.....

Wednesday I got my trainer and we were suppose to leave at 1830 for a load to be delivered in Orlanda, Fl at 10:00 the next day. Unfortunately for us that trailer did not show up in the terminal until 22:40. We grabbed it and hauled ###. He drove us onto the Interstate and then I drove the entire way to Orlando. We were 3 hours late on our load and I drove my butt off. So we were charged a late fee and put in the back of the line. Dont think we got out of there until around 16:00. Our next load was cancelled because we would have been late. They got us another load a short while later that we were to pick up in a swift terminal not far from where we were. I didnt get any sleep that night. I was up for about 37 hours. Not because I had to be but I was so interested with everything going on that I wasnt tired.

The load we picked up in FL was to be dropped in Charleston, SC. It was scheduled for 11:00 the next day. There was alot of time on the load so my trainer went home to see his wife on the way. He asked if I wanted to come too but at that point I was already half asleep in the truck so I decided to just stay and sleep in the truck. He came back and woke me about 4:30 and I did a pre inspect and we hit the road. I drove the whole way to the drop off. I got to the 99 roughly 40 minutes early and to my surprise they took us right away. I attempted my first dock back. I didnt do to bad for my first time but it wasnt that good either. After we had the trailer unloaded we headed back to his wifes house, where we are now.
We will be staying here until noon Monday, when his truck will be ready.

Thats about it for now. I'll post some more of my adventures after I have some more lol.

Hopefully you guys get along well, sounds like you do. and you do not spend too much time at his home while you are training.
You want to get your miles in within a decent amount of time, so you can get solo and make some real money.

    Oh, and just to clarify.
If you say the load is to be "dropped" that means you are actually dropping that trailer and hooking a different trailer.
Otherwise you were scheduled for unload.
Trucks break though. It is just part of the job. Cannot do much about that.

Yes we get along good. I dont expect to spend much time here. He told me he runs hard and this is the first time he has taken time off in almost a year.

When we started, his truck was actually in the shop. We were running in a loaner truck. It was a piece of ####. Engine light, asr, abs, trailer abs light all on. It was a slug. Couldnt climb a slight incline empty worth of ####. Brakes felt like garbage. First trailer we had dog tracked pretty bad. I chalked it up to the trailer. Second trailer we had same exact dog track. I chalk that up to the truck now. Could be wrong and could have got 2 bad trailers in a row but the truck was a piece of crap lol. Trainer did not feel safe in the truck. He actually asked me if I wanted to wait the weekend or get a new trainer. I like this trainer and we get along good. He is very smart and he actually is telling me stuff and training me the whole way. I decided to stay with him without a thought. Id rather wait one weekend instead of rolling the dice on another trainer that could be a dick.

Put some grease on that 5th wheel. Most likely your dog track will go away.
Many of their trailers do it a little, due to people not knowing how to slide tandoms correctly. But in your case it sounds like a dry 5th wheel.

We got rid of that truck already but I will definately keep that in mind if it happens when I get a truck.

Thanks for your continuous advice on these forums Chrome. I know many people here, including myself, appreciate all the time you spend here with us new guys.

Hey guys. They just moved us to the Econlodge today. We did backing on Friday and Saturday. Didn't do to bad my straight backing needs a bit of work but I am learning how to control my trailer. Monday they split us up and we do some on rookie road and the other half gets to work on pre-trip and backing. I'm excited. There are 7 girls in this class and so far we are all doing really well. We have today off then start all over again on Monday.

biggest thing in the straight back is to catch the trailor drifting early as possible. That way you only have to make small 1/4 turn corrections. Keep swapping what mirror your looking at. Watch the trailor tires on both sides constantly. If you start losing sight of tires on one side that turn a 1/4 turn the other way. Once you got site of both wheels again then straighten the wheel back up. Go slow and be patient takes about 10 ft or so before you see a correction.

Im glad you are doing well. You sound like you are really enjoying yourself.

    ProPilot Thanks this.

When straight backing try and stay sitting back in your seat. You only need to see a small amount of the trailer in each mirror.
Then if the part you see gets larger or smaller you need to adjust.
No real need to use both mirrors as long as you stay straight.
When most people drift and loose the trailer is while looking from one mirror to the other.

Yeah I did think about sitting further back in the seat and doing it that way. I didn't have any problem with the parallel and the alley dock i did ok on just my first day of backing was the straight back and off set. I would get my truck and trailer straight then some how i was coming in at an angle and didn't know how to correct it. I had Jay yesterday with the parallel and the alley dock. He was really helpful and explained the parallel and made it really easy and the funny thing is the class before us kept telling us how hard it was................ But yes I am excited and I really cant wait to get out there on the road with the rest of you.

Just try sitting back, look only at the drivers mirror.
Put your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel.
If the trailer gets bigger in the mirror then move your hand left, if it starts to disappear, then move your hand right.
Just move the hand the way you want the trailer to go.
Take your time, it is not an Olympic event.
