Lets not go to crazy with this "off site" server crapola or "purchasing computer equipment."
Almost every person in business has a computer and internet at home or the office. Off site storage is not that expensive. Take that Mozy site. $4.95 a month. I believe some of the others are priced the same. It's tax deductible.
But what's this "server" you're talking about? If he's an O/O and running his operation from a desk in his "home office" like out of the barn or livingroom or closed in garage he doesn't need servers. Just that tower unit under the desk or the laptop on top of the desk. DOT comes in there when he gets audited so why a server. Servers are for a larger network of computers not some small home operation. A tower unit will do the same thing as a server as well that's what some of the are is just a computer with a few add ons. or::
Definition: A network server is a computer designed to process requests and deliver data to other (client) computers over a local network or the Internet. Network servers typically are configured with additional processing, memory and storage capacity to handle the load of servicing clients:::
in other words it's a computer on steroids or like the monster under my desk right now or what you kids are now PLAYING their games on!
OK that's cleared up.
Lets wait till all the ink is dried before we panic with whats written and what the final craploa bill and law looks like. Get enough drivers to write their congress critter with their ideas on this like where/when to down load. If most of us tell them that down loading to a pocket flash drive, laptop or shop computer maybe once a month is good then that's how it just might come out. As long as the information is there when an audit comes around why worry or when you pull into the scales for a roadside which is the REAL reason for this stupid POS legislation?
I've even heard that they want these EBORs to link wirelessly to some main site or server or even by satellite to someone like QC or Peoplenet or that Mega BFI you leased on to! OK then fight for "Hey you want to impose all these costs on a small business then you pick up some of these outrageous costs and either pay it your self or get us mega tax breaks! That's what these congress critters are supposed to do! (want to get their attention? Comming up soon, a chance to get rid of those who don't listen to those who put them in office! Time to take out the trash!) Work for US not some BFI Mega corp that's being threatened by smaller companies that actually have and give better service to their customers!
Anyway, When the O/O does his download he can be in BFE as far as that is concerned. After he downloads that POS EBOR he can go on line and send it to the home office OR he can download to an online storage company like Mozy or just keep it on the computer until he gets home. A good backup plan wouldn't hurt though, like backing up to a flash drive for incase the computer takes a dump or someone wanted it more than the owner. A backup is always recommended no matter what! The mantra is Backup! Backup! Backup! stands if all you do is write poetry or novels or run your business out of the truck! These flash drives are into the 60GB size range and that's a LOT of information. You can even buy them in waterproof and shock proof styles for better safety while it's on your key ring. OR you can now get solid state hard drives in an external case to backup to. A SSHD won't suffer knocks and bangs the way an old style HD does with the spinning platters.
The ONLY reason these BFI's Schneider, Warner, Swift and the rest are pushing this POS legislation is they are tired of having to pay people to handle the paper logs. They can have fewer people on the payroll just to answer a beep when the automatic scanning program tells them someone is screwing up! safety is no where in the equation but idiot congress critters and Gooberment workers will listen to these Mega Corporation morons as "they know more" and have the money to pay a lobbyist to lie for them! And not to mention they get rid of their competition by using the gooberment as the hatchet man! But drivers will flock to them, get screwed and love it!
I do believe that O/O's CAN get around the cost of these "boxes" if they pool their money and buy in bulk like on fuel plans or maybe if OOIDA and a few good congress critters get together force a goonberment price reduction and a very nice tax break on the units as they forced it on them so give them a brake. It can happen.

I do see your point, Jim. It has not been good in the past for driver involvement and carriers have gotten what they wanted. But one can only hope that maybe that one issue will come along that finally wakes up most people that they are getting handed a bill of goods. Much in the same way that the general public has not really gotten involved with what was being handed them, we have failed to step as well.
Who knows, maybe nothing will improve. But just like a fire starts as only a spark, it could change, one driver at a time. In this case also one small carrier at a time as well. A lot of times, things like this do not become known to the average driver until it is too late. The Senate is in recess and a number of senators are on the ballot. The mood of the country is not very favorable to more government intrusion in their lives. It might just be the right time in history for drivers/small carriers to make a difference. Only time will tell.JimDriv3r Thanks this. -
JIMDRIV3R, it's up to YOU and only you to do the right thing. we don't need to hold hands to do the right thing, just do it. If the majority start to do it, things will change. Forums like this are a good place to keep these ideas rolling into the minds of the new drivers which you may know, make up the most of the workforce out here. I've seen it changing (drivers only running legal) in the last few years. it's happening. The increase in new immigrants to the field is another sign the companies are having to bring in those who may be in a weaker position when it comes to saying NO. Just keep reinforcing the idea of staying legal only when you have the chance.

You do make some good points. I have no doubt that the reason that the mega carriers MAY be pushing this is because they are tired of processing paper. That is the primary reason my carrier is switching over. But does that justify forcing it down the throat of everyone else? What is this facination with wanting Government involved in everything and controlling more and more of our lives?
You may be right that the costs will not be a problem. I have a problem with the "tax deductable" argument. I am not sure that spending a dollar to get .20 in tax deduction really makes a good case for tax deductability. Besides, you have to have that dollar to spend before it means anything.
In either case, do we just let more regulation get passed and hope for the best. We got that scam handed to us with ObamaCare. We are going to have a lot of fun processing all those 1099's every business including O/O (leased on or independent) is going to have to file on any business they conduct over $600 of business with in a year..... a mandate slipped into ObamaCare. In that situation it might be repealed, but no sure thing.
But, I suppose you do have a point that I might be taking some things to an extreme. I do not trust very much of what Government does. Just a result of being a Vietnam Veteran, I guess.

Big difference between standing together on common issues, and taking personal responsibility for your own actions. The latter is unrelated to my original statement.

Thanks for the service and Welcome Home!
I don't trust them any more than I can throw them but that's why a phone call, a snail mail letter or Email to these people we put in office is necessary! I always get a return letter or email from my congress critters when I contact them. They know my voice when I call in to "voice" my opinion! They also know I vote EVERY time there is a vote needed and I use my vote!
There are some out there that still think that it does no good to write or call and they are the ones that whine the most! If you don't let them know how do they figure out anything?
As to the "tax deductible" argument. If I HAVE to buy something to do my job then I want a break on it. The bigger the better. If it's GOOBERMENT MANDATED then I want a BIG tax break or they can pick up the purchase price, installation costs, training and I guess I'll have to pick up the yearly but give US a break and not make some small "box building company" RICH off of those you make take something!
We need to do more input and not stand by the side as MEGA MORONS try to run the industry! -
Get this straight: SWIFT IS NOT PUSHING THIS LEGISLATION AND IS ACTIVELY OPPOSING IT!!!!
Look at that list of companies again. Swift tried e-logs out on a small number of trucks and found it didn't work for them. In fact, we have gone to loose-leaf logging. Swift's CSA score is 33, well below the threshold for "intervention" and would just as soon the guv'mint leave 'em alone.
So stop making assumptions and spreading rumors, already.Schmidtrock Thanks this. -
I wondered if anyone would bother informing ROLLOVER of his erroneous broad-brushed statement. well played swift
