Now im a new guy but the truck i just drove for a month on a harvest crew was a 1988 KW T-600 with a cat (not sure what model) and the best power/economy i got was upshifting at around 1900 rpm and downshifting at around 1550 rpm. 15 spd tranny, average 5.3 mpg, average 70mph, and regularly passed the other 10 379 petes and the 2 freightliners that made up the rest of the grain hauling fleet, except for the one with the 18 speed (d*** you number 4, lol)

The Cat engines pull great at sub-1200rpm but you are torturing your transmission doing this, it's really not recommended.
