A mom had dropped off one child at day care and was hit broadside when an eighteen wheeler ran a stop sign. She was dead at the scene and the child died on the way to the hospital. The driver admitted he ran the stop sign. He was on his way to pick up a load of potatoes at Edmore, Michigan.

Sad story. I hate to hear it. One more reason to slow down and observe our surroundings.

And this is why they need to weed out all the non-professionals

    Even professionals have accidents.

So sad. Thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

Accidents can happen to the best of us, any one of us, at any time. It's unfortunate, but true. That's why they're called accidents. To think that it doesn't, the "it won't happen to me" attitude, is all wrong. :biggrin_25513:

I agree, mostly, but running a stop sign is negligent at best, making this accident eminently preventable.
Accidents do happen, but a bit of care would have kept this woman and her child alive.

Not stopping at a stop sign is not a mistake, it's a choice he made.

They aren't called "accidents" any more. They have been called "collisions" for several years now. Why? Because the vast majority of them aren't "accidents" at all, but are entirely preventable. The classification was changed specifically due to attitudes like this...that "accidents happen" thinking that enables a person to sidestep responsibility.

I don't think as you describe, "It'll never happen to me." Rather, I think, "What are my options if this car/bus/truck/cycle does this......and how can I prevent it from getting worse...or happening in the first place?" These two thought processes are vastly different. One is complete denial, the other is proactive prevention.

That other idea"accidents happen" places the person in defense mode wherein an excuse or justification is sought rather than a solution. It's a blame game at that point and to begin the entire process with that thinking almost ensures there will be no preventive action...and certainly no responsibility accepted. It's what I call Stinkin Thinkin.

There was no excuse for running that stop sign. No matter how big a hurry we get into sometimes, nobody's life is worth it. Even if the truck was approaching from the non-signed street and the car ran the stop sign. It is our job as professionals to always be aware of what's going on around us, watch out for knuckleheads making stupid mistakes and above all, to strive to never be that knucklehead.
