if he is a clean cut guy with some brains, get his butt over to Conway, they hire fresh out of school "driver apprentices". starting pay over at conway should be about 18 an hour, with overtime as well. Check out DATS Trucking, MTS Freight, Estes, Old Dominion,R&L Carriers, Southwestern Motor Transport ,Saia, and Viatran Trucking as well. These are all "less than truckload motor freight" companies, and are an entirely different ball game than crappy Over The Road truckload freight.

just look them up online and look for the nearest terminal, get a resume together, make him put a suit and tie on, and go start filling out applications. Don't just call and ask if they are hiring, they are usually too busy to bother. Show up in person and impress them, and ask to fill out an application, and that way, even if they aren't hiring, the TM should remember you. Don't let people discourage you from trying these companies, its not rocket science, its just a better trucking job.

Starting LTL wages probably average around 45-50,000 a year, depending on where you live. Top rate guys where i work make between 65-70, 000 a year. That is on a 5% pay cut that has been in effect for 2 years.

Don't talk yourself out of it, Trucking can be a VERY profitable career! I started with crappy Werner 5 years ago, and now I run Linehaul every night and bring in 1100 a week for 50-55 hours of work.

Do 8-5 M-F with weekends off jobs even exist anymore? Is employment rather "limited" where you live? MOST Americans these days are lucky to have a job ANYwhere in order to put food on the table. If your town is rather depressed, like the rest of the country, that trucking job might be one of the few things that he can get. If he's more qualified, maybe he can search for jobs (or you can help him) while driving for Swift.

Either way, it's my opinion that you may want to examine the alternatives. There might not be many. I think going to an employer and asking for an 8-5, M-F job might not yield very positive results these days, but then, I'm only an expert on my own opinion.

    It sure can be,.........

I start around 8:30 and finish up between 17:00 and 18:30 most days,...And I only work Monday through Friday,....

It is possible to have a family friendly schedule in trucking if you are willing to look for it,...

UPS is the only company of the three that has Teamster representation,...

And the first step to getting hired at any decent ltl company is to fill out the application,....

I think the UPS wage is the average for the package car drivers,....

Conway truckload does not pay nearly as well as Conway ltl,....

And again the fed ex wage is more than likely the package delivery drivers,...

Line haul at most ltl's,....Pays very well,.....

This is a crappy career choice for a family man. Tell home to go get a job that he will be home at night. His kids need him at home and so do you. My opinion is stand your ground bring him home your kids grow up to fast for anything else.

Tell him to go get a local job, trash company, cement, hell I would clean Portolets and have to be with my kids.

    LindaLou Thanks this.

One does not need to wait a year working for a crappy company before they apply for a good local job,..

Funny thing about good local jobs is that you have to have the confidence to apply to get hired,....

I agree, it is just personal drive and priorities. If you look they are there.
