I'm buying a new laptop to take OTR with me, and along with it I can get a heck of a deal on a Multi-Functon printer, will I actually use it, or will it just take up space?

It will just take up space until you desperately need it.
You can use it to receive faxes via e-mail, say for expired permits, trailer registrations, etc., you can also use it to scan in receipts or the odd thing that you might need to send in - if your company uses Transflo and subscribes to it, you can use it to Transflo your paperwork without having to find an equipped truckstop.CAM Thanks this. -
Thanks Statikuz for the quick response,
Maybe I'll go ahead and get it, then just leave it home until I actually have a need for one. My wife and I are planning to team drive, and I'm sure space will be very limited. -
If you get a wireless, and your laptop has wireless, then you don't have to worry about cords. We bought a Lexmark for the truck that's wireless, and like it very much. Walmart has several options for wireless printer combos.

I can't find a good mobile printer (not a full size) that's also a scanner. Any recommendations?

The PS is much smaller than any converter I have ever seen. and can be velcro'd to a wall or the printer. My home PS is velcro'd under the printer stand.
Just make sure you enable the wireless security or you might find me printing on your printer.. LOL -
I assume by "full-size" you mean not a giant multi-function, something more single-sheet fed. I have not been able to find a combination mobile printer/scanner. Either you get two separate devices or you get an all-in-one and try to make room for it. There are a number of mobile scanners that are reasonably priced (Brother DS-600, Visioneer Road Warrior, Canon P-150) and also some mobile printers in the same form factor (Brother PocketJet 3) but that particular printer is a little spendy and only prints on special thermal paper. HP makes a compact printer (OfficeJet H470) as well.

I have to ask: Are you an O/O? if you're a company driver go here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...GNEFL050509-_-ScannerFlatbed-_-L0C-_-38111023 This is a scanner. As a company driver you really don't need a printer! As to why? I had an HP multi function printer/scanner and never used the stupid printer. Just scan the copy and email it to the company, or that is if they have anyone smart enough to actually know how to print from a jpeg or doc file! Some of these MORONS that think they're a business still rely on that scale shedding dinosaur called FAX!That is "soooo last century!"
It's like I had to tell Trans Am when I had the misfortune to drive for them! They lost paper work like crazy! And then when called on it they wanted me to fax the copy and then would lose that receipt until I told them to either pay me or send me the cost of the copy and fax and a PO#. They figured out how to do it by email!
Using the scanner all you have to do is scan to a file and then email the stupid file to them! No long distance charges, minutes charges, broadband/data cost of using the cell phone to fax that way and yes you can fax using a doc file!
This one scanner takes up room in the laptop case, not a shelf! But if you so need a printer this is a new product out and looks promising for when you just got to have something printed AND it hooks up to some smart phones! IDK the price but all of the "portable" printers out there are a bit pricy but where space is a premium and if you need to "bail" from the truck taking these with you in your "one" bag should not be a problem. http://planon.com/products/printstik
But all in all I would shy away from a $75 Printer/scanner as that's the loss of a whole shelf AND they don't take truck life well! I got lucky with one that lasted almost a year from the beating it took.
I'd just scan and save and when a copy is needed you can stop at a Kinkos OR use the CB and ask if someone has a printer and put what you need to a flash drive and go use their printer. And do not go into panic mode about "viruses" on flash drives! If someone hands you a FD then scan it before you open it! If you have a half way decent virus program you won't have a problem as long as you do a daily update! -
Agreed on the scanner - most will scan directly to a PDF and if there's something that office people love, it's PDFs.

I use a Canon copier, scanner, printer. In a Volvo 780 it wasn't to bad on taking up space. When I have to T-Call a load (drop off in transit for another driver to continue with) I'm required to have a copy of the bills for my trip envelope. Sometimes finding a copier at 3 am isn't easy! Also, if I was picking up a load like that, I helped the driver dropping by making him a copy. If you can spare the room, the convience is good. I paid around $100 for mine and took the road fine, althought the ink is kinda pricy!
