I had AOL for a while several years ago and wanted to cancel, they gave me the same run around. Either there was no answer on the phone or their computor was "down" and could not cancel..
After two months of this what I did was change my credit card number and that done away with the charges...

Has anyone ever heard the phone conversation where the guy is trying to cancell AOL and the CSR keeps trying to sell AOL crap to him and it turns into a pissing contest.

I told the guy I wanted to cancel, and he would reply with a reason I shouldn't. I would say several times during this 20 minute (that's 20 more minutes on top of the wait) that all I wanted was to cancel. He would always come back with another reason, telling me I'd be making a big mistake. At one point I asked to speak to his supervisor, which he refused, saying that we didn't need a supervisor in this. Finally he goes into this long speil about it, and I felt like a 3 year old because I resorted to just talking over him...
I want to cancel...I want to cancel...I want to cancel...I want to cancel...
I must have said this about 30 times, and he just kept on going. Then he got irritated and said "sir, you're just going to make this take a lot longer". Then he switched gears, clearly being a pr*ck. He rudely went through all of the disclaimers and such, and finally cancelled me.
Luckily, they didn't keep charging me on my CC. I would have hated to had to call back and deal with that again. AOL so far has been the worst company I've ever dealt with. I will not ever use any of their services again, no matter how they repackage their company. -
I have had AOL for several year's now, as it is the best ISP in my area. I live in the boonies DSL or cable are not availiable, but sattelite is available but way to high in price anyway.
I had it when I lived in KY also, I was about to move to Ohio and I knew I could get cable where I was moving to so i called to cancel my AOL subscription.
I was offered several FREE months to continue my subscription so I did continue, and when they were getting ready to start charging me I called again to cancel.......same thing I recieved several more free month's so I took these also.
That was about 4 years ago maybe more...I still have them today but I am a paying cust. now but I get it for $17.95 a month also.
There is pc people availiable here for $9.95 for the first year then it goes up to more than I pay now....So I think I will just keep them until of course DSL becomes available here. -

I just had a similar expierence with a company. Took $200 out of my checking account for a catalog credit card that I never ordered or got. Put an end to that when I Fraud Alerted my accounts.
Probably someone took a copy of her account number and applied with AOL. -
I put my pay check into the account, and was automatically in the red! I had been billed for something called AOL Magazine. It took me 6 months to get it straightened out, and I was on the phone with AOL, and the bank almost on a daily basis. AOL would put me on hold for hrs.... I believe my record was 10 hrs. But my persistance finally paid off.
I'd always get the response, "there's nothing I can do about it," and I would always reply," Well then put me on the phone with someone that can!"
AOL Magazine was around $100 buck charge I believe, and I still don't know what the %^& it is.
