I am talking about units that run in B.C, and haul 144,000 lbs, up regular mountain pulls of over 50 minutes. If you run lower weights or flatter territory you will get longer service.
But if you are running lower weights and flatter ground a 12.7 would be a better choice. I know lots of them pre 1990 that got well above a million.
Oil changes and clean air is what makes an very good engine last a long time.
What engine N14 or pre-EGR ISX is beter?

How much should one really be paying to have a ISX overhauled? Prices are all over the place, with people paying as much as 19k and as little as 8k. Also what kind of warranty should one expect from the shop doing the overhaul? Anyone recommend a good shop to do the good job at a fair price?

Please explain what blown up means to you, I have seen pistons come apart all there was in the cylinder was the wrist pin, It was fixed in frame 1 head, 1 kit, oil cooler core, and full set of bearings. I do not ever remember one completely blowing up to the junk stage.

Same here....I went through my 525 at 950,000 miles and there were no signifigant problems in it, We were doing a head and decided to inframe it because it had so many miles on it.
Cummins techs all say it's the best motor that they've ever built and that the ISX is not nearly as sturdy as the N-14.
I have an ISX that I was gonna repower my KW with in order to deal with all of the nonsense in California but I decided #### California and I'm gonna sell the ISX and keep the N-14 and just do an out of frame major on it when the time comes!
If and when California ever stops us from running older engines in their state, I'll just drop them from my IRP and be a 47 state carrier!Lalito1234 Thanks this. -
