Under 26000lbs makes no difference, when I worked for Schenck Communications Pronounced- Skank, doing underground construction, our vehicles had DOT numbers on them and were regulated by DOT, our trucks were F-250's up to F-450's. Its good to research the states you will be crossing and find their laws before hand, could save you money down the road, also ask Uhaul before renting, I would think they would have to disclose such laws before hand.

If I see a sign that says "all trucks over ***** gvw, must enter scale" that means all trucks over ***** must enter. No matter if they are a U Haul or a semi.

The cutoff is usually at 18-20K...and every U-Haul is under 20K. IIRC, the big Super Movers (International S1600's, Ford F-600's, Chevy C-50's, new GMC C4500's) are 18,500.

If you pull livestock or grain in a bobtail truck, you have to stop. If you haul a John Deere tractor on a gooseneck, its considered farm use and they wont even look at you.

    The final verdict is....

Whomever said it was probably an agriculture check (in Florida) that went after them was correct. Their sign clearly states "All Rented Trucks/Trailers". The scale was then directly after and said "All Trucks Trailers". No mention of rented or not. I skipped it, but a Ryder rental in front of me went through. So who knows?

There are lots of reasons to run trucks through weigh stations, one thing is to make sure the truck has the right tags for weight. I was at the scale on US 41 south of Green Bay,WI and they ran a Chevy Avalanche across for having 4500 lb plates, some places read all trucks over 6000 lbs, many scales run pickups pulling Rvs across to check that they have heavy enough rear tires on the pickup. Best to stop if any doubt, they will tell you to go on if they don't want to check you.

Many of the scales call for all vehicles over 6,000 lbs to enter.

Pickups pulling RV's are subject to DOT laws when they are commercial.

NM requires all commercial vehicles to enter and for rental cars and trucks.

some states go as low as 4 tons and rentail equipment must stop when open...The best way is the safeway go thur all that you come to that are open...Its better than getting a ticket for passing a open scale and the hassel they will give you..
