Hey everyone first off I want to say thanks for all the information I have found throughout this forum. A couple of questions for any Alaskan Truck Drivers or anyone else that might know. I start school tomorrow and would like to know:
    1. Some of your experiences driving in Alaska vs driving in the lower 48 or just driving in Alaska in general ie. some of the pros and cons
2.How hard is it to get a job up there?
3.Would it be better to look for a job right out of school or should I get a years experience first?
    Thanks for the help.

I think if you have grand allusions to being on the next season of Ice Road Truckers... you should replace it with better motives.... lol

I've actually never seen that show I was actually talking more about driving on at least semi-paved roads...

You should see the show for reference. The roads are paved with snow, and if I recall correctly, the winter is the driving season as the ground is too soft for heavy trucks in summer, and the roadway over the ocean disappears.

Winter is indeed the driving season, as during the other 3 seasons, the roads become too soft and the ones which pass over the ocean disappear.

Actually most roads are open. For instance you can get to Prudhoe Bay in any month. I have been there once, about 25 years ago in late August and early Sept. No ice on the roads to speak of. Just watch out for certain roads (Small, gravel and steep grades). The steepest grades I can remember were 12%, but there are steeper on other roads. Back then there was a long section of one direction road across Brooks Range, which I believe is all two way now. The roads were hell on your truck and your back.

    Best regards
