Hi everyone,
I am new to this forum. My husband has been driving since he was 19 and in the Marines. He has driven just about everything there is. He is now driving triples locally for a Contractor for FedEx Ground.
We are seriously thinking of taking the plunge to become O/O. We have looked into several different options including lease programs with Knight, Swift etc. Those options don't seem very profitable so that is not the way we want to go.
We have seriously been thinking of Landstar. They have the program where you use their trailer. How is Landstar as a broker company? We want to be successful with this and would like to know of experiences people have had. We have four kids so it needs to be a financially sound move for us. I would be at home trying to book his runs for him and take care of the books. He would be driving or as he says "driving his life away one mile at a time".
When I talked to recruiting they really don't give a great idea of the icome potential so that part scares me. He is a hard worker and he is already use to working 5 days a week, 16 hour days. He is no stranger to busting his behind to make a living.
Any advice or insight from people who have gone through LS would be great.
Thank you!!

Welcome. I've never dealt with Landstar personally but take your time and do lots of homework. There's a lot of variables from company to company like age of truck, base plate fee's, area of operation and much more not to mention pay and financial history of carrier. Good luck.

Welcome to the forum Krista and Fred.
I'm not leased to Landstar but have pulled for them recently. The load paid well and all was pretty smooth. I was impressed.
I think if I were ever to lease on to a company, Landstar would certainly get a much closer look. -
Thank you for the replies. I am hoping some people who have gone through them well respond too.
So much to think about. We have been thinking about this for nearly 10 years now. I think we are not getting any younger and should take the next step. FedEx ground is not going to set him up to ever retire so we need to do that ourselves.
I was also wondering if anyone has any advice on buying the truck. Is it better to get a used truck or to purchase new and get some tax breaks for depriciation?
Thanks again!

You'll depreciate the truck, whether it's new or used. Most that know me around here know that my big thing is "Keep Your Overhead Down".
