If you're broke or unemployed, WIA is a great program that will pay for all of your training without having to repay it...It's not something that's advertised and if it wasn't for a cousin of mine that used the program, I would never have heard about it, I owe him bigtime!

I fell into the category of low income due to recession killing my business and am currently in school using their funds...Test is next Wedneday! :biggrin_25525:

WIA is run thru your local unemployment office and you don't have to be able to collect or even collecting it to qualify, call your local office and ask to speak to the Rep that handles WIA to see if you qualify...

Here is the list of contact info for most states(strange how they don't list Kentucky but I know it's here, if you don't see your state, call your local unemployment office):

If your state gives you a hard time:

    http://www.doleta.gov/programs/ETA_default.cfm?#Dislocated

    Forearmed and all that..

One other thing In North Carolina don't bother calling the Secretary's Office they will only direct you to your local ESC office. Each ESC has a person dedicated to WIA. At this point in time WIA is about exhausted in NC or so they will tell you. According to the Department of Workforce Development there is still plenty of money. Tell them you want to apply anyway. They have to forward your application to the nearest DWD office. It's DWD that actually approves or disapproves your application.

I will tell you, you will not get money for non-accredited schools in NC. Make sure your school of choice is accredited.

Walstib, great post!!! Way to look out for your fellow citizen. This is great info to have if you are in need of money and don't want to go to a "driver mill" and owe them thousands of dollars. Again, great post!!!

And at some locations, you can walk next door and sign up for food stamps.

Our federal government is doing an excellant job of caring for us !!!!!!!!!!!

i thought you had to be unemployed to use the WIA.

There's plenty of working folks who are too broke to go to truck school. I know I"m one of them. lol

It helps to be unemployed (not fired or quit), but as it was pointed out to me there are provisions in the act that cover those on public assistance and certain low income groups.

If you are employed with a low income, you may be able to convince your unemployment office to approve you. Walsitb did!!

I got my CDL with all endorsements using this program! It was sure nice starting this Carrier debt free!.. I cant believe all these new drivers starting this job with $5000.-$6500 worth of debt. I was not low income when I applied for this program even my home is already paid for and I have a good size bank account equivalent to 40 years worth of trucking pay! They approved me anyway without problem.

They also have TRA and TAA if you lost your job to a foreign competitor.
It pays 15k a year for two years, but you have to go to school full time to get it. Oh, and the company you worked for has to have been certified by the state.
