I went and Googled John Deere and Detroit diesel. something I did not know was that Detroit got John Deere to cast some of the cylinder heads for the 50 series. Just a thought!

I could not find any confirmation on it but the 8.2 is a posible John Deere Detroit collaboration, that would make sense.

Cabover Mike and Independent Thank this.

It's pretty common knowledge in the 2 stroke enthusiast circles that the 60 series was designed by Deere because the 2 stroker failed to pass emissions despite everything they tried including electronic controls (DDC), that is where I learned about it.
A similar thing is how Cummins bought the original already designed 5.9L 6B engine from Case tractor company, which later on made Cummins famous when it was shoehorned into Dodge pickup trucks in 1989. -
I run a DD 6V92TA in a 28,000 lb bus/motorhome conversion. Allison 740 trans, 3.70 rear, w/ 11R 24.5 tires and I see a little over 6 mpg # 63 mph (2100 rpm).
If I run 70-72, in the mountains, I yield 5.2 - 5.5. Your mileage will vary.
I have always been told NOT to lug the engine with low rpm's, below 1800, especially up hills.
Hope this helps, good luck with your decision.
What is your location, I have many friends with the same engine & qualified 2 stroker repair contacts. -
I had an 8V92TA in a '79 Aerodyne, 13 over, I don't remember the axle ratio. I ran west coast from MI and averaged mid 4 mpg loaded, over 5 with an empty reefer. I would guess that 8v92s that averaged <4 mpg loaded were being being operated at high RPM; I didn't drive mine that way.
