Does anyone know anything about "Midwest Driver Development"? This is a 3 week CDL driver training course apparently run by a company called "WEL Companies inc." They train you and assist in helping you attain a CDL, then upon successful completion and getting your CDL they offer you employment.
The $3500 training fee is paid on your behalf if you sign a 1 yr contract. Any advice or insights on this company would be welcome.
I'm 45 and will be brand new to this career field due to being s_it-canned from my former job of 23 years +. That one's going to court though.
What is considered a fair starting rate of pay?

Jeffb, Welcome to the world of entry level drivers. I don't know what WEL offers as a driver training course to get a CDL. I'm flying there Sunday as a new hire for orientation & 6 wks. company OTR training. As for pay, you may expect 25-30 cents per mile to start. Some companies offer higher rates but may not have the miles to offer. The best thing to do wherever you work is work. Take the load assignments they give you and drive. If you get a bunch of short runs, at least you're running. Stay cautiously optimistic and you'll be OK. Driving won't make you rich, but you can be quite comfortable with your income. Drive safe

Chatted with them a couple times.
There is not a ton of info about them floating around, but it does not seem as negative as many other places.
I was chatting with them about getting hired as a new/recent grad, the pay, etc seemed par for the course...mandatory perdiem, no reinburment for school pushed them to #2 on my list...one big plus is they do appear to have a mostly tri-pack equipped fleet, a big plus IMO, and run both regional and full OTR. Pay after 6 months for a recent grad was pretty good, and better than most after 1 year...but it is reefer, so more waiting for loads/unloads, so less miles. Tough to judge, but in a thread or two here, most folks seem OK about the company.
Like I said, I don't know about their driving school...heck when the caller ID said Midwest driver development it confused me a bit, but it was WEL, and I googled it and found out they had a school.

To Johnny 111 I finished training, took my final road test, got a truck and went to work. Got home Christmas eve & had 5 days off. Training was a very good experience. My trainer was very experienced and very patient. No pushing and shoving to get me thru it. Give WEL a try and you might become a driver, not just another steering wheel holder!! Good luck and drive safe
