They had a particular load profile in mind when they started that. The shipper involved is a really large account, and they appear to be very happy with what Prime has done. Got another very large account that is shifting business their way because of that too. Just means a company driver has more work - but he gets to shower more often too!
Um... maybe that's a good thing!
Just so ya know... there's at least one other large fleet that's starting to do this as well. Saw a baby Pete in Marten colors the other day, looked to be spec'd the same way.
The "New" part is because they survived a chapter 13 bankruptcy back in the 1980's. Seems they figured something out because unlike a lot of the competition the last couple of years, they did survive the most recent national economic debacle and came through stronger.
Nope he wouldn't have gotten hurt - but it will get you kicked out of the training program if you screw it up. So maybe he wasn't quite as much of a schmuck as you are implying... just a thought.
They still do. Pretty simple really - they found that lease drivers tend to pay alot more attention to reefer settings when they're paying the bill for the fuel. End result was a lot less reefer fuel burned.
OTOH, Prime went out and spent a lot of money configuring the reefers with different software that is tailored to individual load profiles - so the reefers run a lot less than they used to. They have talked some of the accounts into not having us run the reefers continually with the doors open loading and unloading too - within reason. On the lease side, you have 2 hours after hooking to fill the reefer tank and you're fully reimbursed for that. You pay the rest of the bill, but you can also choose where to buy your reefer fuel - and save some money that way too.
On the company side, drivers are required to have at least 3/4 of a tank to drop a trailer.
Works out. I'm averaging around 1-cpm in reefer fuel costs.
CR England scares the crap outa me!!! to prime i go

Well, took a leap of faith yesterday morning and stepped off the truck. I could have gotten a different trainer (she was a bit of a gambling/casino addict, bleh) but instead of a new trainer i accepted a job offer from an O/O that i met in the parking lot of a truckstop in NM, nothing against prime but he was offering more money than them both starting out and in the long run. I'm going to be his co-driver for a few months then he will be buying a second truck and putting me in it. Hopefully im not just screwing myself over but only time will tell.
wish me luck

well you "might be getting paid more",but you sure ain't gonna be getting any benefits, or dead head miles. o/o's do not pay "perks" like those. and if i had a nickle for every time i heard an o/o was going to buy another truck....??? i'd be able to open up my own truck driving school.....
uh yeah, you just screwed yourself. you had also better check your DAC report in about 1 month. sometime tells me, after all that money they spent on you, they are going to DAC you.......
i think "in a few months" that o/o will be saying something like, "well, i THOUGHT i could buy another truck, but things are SLOW NOW".......
can you think of what you will be doing when you get laid-off in a few months...?????
and i do hope that you're "not too tired" to drive the truck for this o/o, as HIS livelihood DEPENDS on that truck rolling.....and he ain't gonna "simulate" his responses/objections to you.....
you went from training and LEARNING with a company ready to invest time and money in you, to going right into the fire frankly, unprepared for what's ahead of you......
oh yeah......
"good luck".......
be sure to check that DAC, because you will need to look for work, when the o/o let's you go..............in a few short weeks from now.......(or you quit)Last edited: Nov 3, 2010

They will most definitely screw his DAC! Probably even his credit. I don't know if he paid them off or not but it will go against your credit if you do not. Some companies report bad credit if you breach the contract. So we went from to tired to drive a simulator to driving for an O/O! So you do realize owner operators run their trucks unlike companies right? You know already that O/O's don't answer to safety departments right? You also know as an experienced drivers that these owner ops don't pay all the time right? I would prepare yourself to be ran hard, running illegal, no sleep, and most likely not getting paid for what you have done. I hope you have some money in the bank so when all this happens next week and this guy leaves you in the middle of the desert you will have a way to get home.
Seriously if you haven't told Prime about your new endeavor yet then I would go back there if I were you. Trust me, I am saying this in the nicest way possible, you are not cut-out for this! Not to mention even if you were this guy does not sound legit! Owner operators don't just pick up new drivers at truck stops and offer them to drive their own truck. If they do there is something wrong!

Rerun, chances are he doesn't know what you are talking about anyway and will get screwed without knowing it. That is, if he gets paid by this guy! -
I don't think this guy even has a CDL... his first couple of posts mention going to Springfield for "class" - not orientation. I think he's about to get a royal shaft myself.
On the DAC - he shouldn't have a problem with that... they give new students a grace period so if they decide driving isn't for them, there's no foul. -
i don't know, but this SOUNDS LIKE, he already has his CDL...???
they go for passports while only learning to get a CDL...??? i hope not.......and i do not believe a non student would even know how to use a "sim" or would even be affraid of using one, as he can't be fired for "hitting something......since he wouldn't even KNOW how to drive in the first place.....
i am not familiar with any "grace periods" from trucking companies, and he "stepped off the truck".....a form of abandonment perhaps...?????. and Chompi, you are right, i didn't even consider he got "pick up" at a truck stop. and YES, many times an o/o DOES NOT pay weekly, as he has to wait to be paid from the broker, or whomever else is supplying the loads. oh well.........
i just believe hes so screwed right now, and in my opinion, he will still get DAC'd big time, maybe for breaking a contract..??? i am just imagining the company has spent about $6,000 on him so far, given the "average" recruitment for one driver can be "up to" $5,000.....!!!
yep, as chompi said, i too hope he has "traveling money" when he gets dropped off in the middle of no where's as o/o's make up thier own rules and answer to none.....chompi Thanks this. -
Yeah... that does sound more like an inexperienced CDL holder going onto a training truck. No contract at this point, and there won't be an abandonment - its the trainer gal's truck.
Yup... even without the DAC issue - he's in for a quite a ride.
