I went to the one in Somers CT, and it was a good school. They do not BS you, tell you like it is.. They do not promise you that you will get hired on by anyone, but do be sure that you tell them everything about you, including you mvr..
-
Are we talking about the same school, did you go to NTTS or NETTS? And if you don't mind me asking how much did it cost?
-
I went to NTTS in Liverpool, Winter of 1991. I remember it was an alright school. The equpiment I am sure has been changed, at the time it wasn't what you would call great (DOT compliance). The classroom and field work were outstanding. I learned alot while I was there.
Please remember, any school you attend, what you put into you will get out. A school will not make a truckdriver out of a person. Go to school, open your mind and soul, listen to those around you. Take what you think is good advice and store away the rest. Listen and Learn.Dirt rd. Thanks this. -
thanks rj parker. so you went during winter. must have been fun. what program did you go with 602 hr.or 320 hr. and was it real expensive then?
-
I'm not sure what is meant by "602 hr" or "302 hr". At the time I was unemployed and was able to go to the weekday course. The school also offered a weekend course. My school start time was something like 7am until 3 or 4 in the afternoon. 5 days a week, with the weekends off.
It was expensive then, I think it was around 5 to 7 thousand dollars for the course. They were quite thorough, even teaching how to put snow chains onto tires, how to change tires. (Even though I've yet to use chains I think I recall how it's done.)
In class training was top notch, we had homework every night, and we were keeping logbooks daily towards the end of the course.
One of the best parts about it for me, training was in the winter time. Snow, a learners permit, very qualified instructors, and an empty tractor trailer made for excellent training. At the time I don't think the school had an instructor with less than 2million miles of driving experience.
The trucks the school had for actual driving were interesting, some had guages that worked, some had bad tires. Please remember this was also 1991 and not 2009. In retrospect the quirks in the equipment was a good thing. It somehow gave me confidence to believe in myself and use the other senses.
I see that you live in NY, what you call "scary co." Am I right that you live in Schoharie County? or Schulyer County. I am originally from the Watkins Glen area.
If so then you should be quite used to the winter weather and the differences in driving. -
I am trying to get in Ntts liverpool also going to attend in winter months I am from arizona but figure learning to drive in icy conditions can only make me a better driver if i can handle the roads there .

i drove class B for years but let it expire awhile ago and am headin to NTTS in liverpool for the 602 hr course. might start this monday nov 1st or on the 22nd.. not sure yet. its cost is 9,252,00 plus a 35 dollars up front for mvr report fee and application fee.
financial aid generally applies to most and pell grants will cover 3718.00ish which you dont pay back and a federal stafford loan also easily gotten that you dont hafta pay back til 6 months after graduation and is 50 dollars a month will cover 6335.00ish. which leaves an 800 overage that the school gives u after you have been attending 2 months.
all that is the exact quotes they gave me today..and wether or not the loan amounts differ per individual i cannot say. the equipment appears to be quite decent and fairly modern.
I have also attended a few of the recruiting seminars there that various trucking companies that hire graduates hold. I like the seminars but ya hafta listen close to every detail before applying to one you think you like. the more u attend and see the better choice you will be able to make. I enjoy speaking with the recruiters alot. there have been so many advances in technology and incentives and so on.
As far as the school goes i would simply suggest that you question often and clearly and if you dont understand say so. I kinda had a hard time gettn straight answers regarding placement assistance which they do not guarantee but the impression i get is that the hiring percentage from them upon completion is quite high.
i had a speeding ticket from 07 on my abstract and when i went to NTTS a year ago the person i spoke with was very adamant that unless that ticket is off my abstract they wouldnt even help me with placement. just help me get my class A and thats it. so i waited and the ticket comes off abstract this February but I am still sensing hesitation when i ask them about placement assistance so i am going in to see the placement director to see what he can tell me on monday. if all is good i will sign on and start that day.
I only mention all this cuz regardless of what school you are interested in do not ever forget that they are salesmen/women. they are trying to recruit a student and really only need to to sign on the line if you qualify. once you sign and attend you are and always will be on your own.. as with anything in life.
so before you sign anything the best thing you can do is ask as many questions as possible and if you dont understand say so and if you still arent getting a clear enough answer to a yes or no question...well.. just think about it. lol -
I'm also looking at this school. I live near Oneonta NY for those that know the area, about two hours from the school. I was also looking at Sage in Vestal because of their affiliation with Schneider but I have to find a pet friendly company. I'm wondering if NTTS will be my better option as far as finding the right company for me.
The 602 course is really long but coming out of it with a year of driving experience would be nice. Still have to wait till I'm 21 and just talk to them I guess.

I went to NTTS back in late 95 early 96...I liked it! But no matter the school they can only teach you so much anyway
