I just would like to throw a few semi-related details regarding my situation on here if i may.
I am about to sign on to NTTS in order to get my class A.
I had a class B for nearly 10 yrs and had a few overnite otr dedicated runs all over the NE but was of course mostly local/daily runs.. but was unable to of course find anyone willing to give me time in the equipment necessary in order to upgrade to an A. i wanted to avoid the training mills and mega carriers but at this stage in my life and what with having a rather negative history (non traffic/lic related.. wth do credit checks and crim checks have to ReallY do with gainful productive and skillful employment other than satisfying some mega corp or mega insurance corps 'needs' and 'requirements'. my negative history is all well over 10 yrs old and the gov even saw fit to grant me a valid passport ID as well yet... still huge difficulties ensue).
i digress.. sry.. anyways..
NTTS wants 9G. 6G of which i can begin paying back # 50 bux a month 6 months after graduating their 602 hour course which is 5 days a week running from nov to march.
i have so much more i could discuss and in much greater detail but this probly isnt the proper place to do so... but i am certain there are drivers out there that had the same or similar difficulties and were able to succeed..
werner definitely recruits from NTTS on a regular basis but so do a few others.. namely Swift, J.B., H.O.W., DOT, Wadhams, Stevens, Wecare Trans, U.S. Xpress, Superior, TMC, TransAm, Roehl, Crete, Falcon, H.O. Wolding.. and a slew of others i think...
sure i will easily graduate this very extensive training to get my A thru ntts but.. sigh.. who will hire? and to whom should i apply? I have no problem grunting thru a 'bottom feeder' to simply get a few yrs/miles under my belt and then looking for better but if i can avoid being mistreated i most certainly will and so i post here lookin for help and advice.
idk..![]()

Man, prices there sure went up!! I went there in 87' and I think it was 2500..lol. I had a blast!! I was 18 at the time. That was before the internet and companies paying to train you. I'm not sure I'd pay that kind of money though nowadays when there are companies training new drivers. Although NTTS was a really good school IMO. My dad even got his cdl there back in the 60's

$9000 for CDL school?... First thing I would do is find a diffrent school. That is highway robbery.
halfburn Thanks this. -
..and what is diesel running these days?
he paid 2500 in 1987
9000 in 2010
I wonder what diesel cost in 87.. or a pack of smokes.. or a gal of milk...lol.
times a change.. our Dollar aint what it used to be and everything costs more and wages get lower and lower...
the course is 5 days a week pretty much 8am-6pm from nov 1st thru to march 07.. a few weeks have shorter days but not many. time is money and from what i have been reading it sounds like it will be way more instruction i would get in any 2-6 week program the mega carriers run on their own.
nearly 4k of it is in grants the rest in a loan that after 6mo require 50. a month.
wether the dollars are a waste or not isnt quite the advice i seek.. ha.
am sorta kinda hopin to hear more about which carriers i should be callin and tryin for pre-hires and which i should definitely not call.
thanx for poppin in and readin tho.

you should look into Swift in Memphis TN. It's not a really bad company to work for. They will include your meals and lodging in the price of your school. You don't have any out of pocket expenses. Plus if it's still the same as when I attended back in '01 then they just take a few cents of your mileage pay to go to paying for school. It's taken out pretax so you really don't even miss it on your pay. Maybe $30 or less each week until you pay it off. I know it can't be $9000. That's a total rip off. No trucking school should cost that much.

Do you have to go to this particular school for your class A? I know there are a lot of companies out there that will pay for your school as long as you complete a contract with them. The contracts can go from 8 months to a year or more. I do not know if this will work for you but it is an option

Well, it was still 50 a month in 87'...BTW wasn't being a ########, was just surprised with all the companies training that they were still around. You might wanna grow some skin if you wanna be a truck driver though. There's alot of security guards and recievers that it'll make you sit coming across so snippy.

hiya Dave.. thanx for the reply.. yeah i sorta ruled swift out.. for now ha.. i know a few ex swifts personally and from their experiences it sounds like i should.. not to mention what i have heard over the radio before and seen on here. I also have a 10 yr old felony conviction i think that will likely make placement with certain carriers difficult if not impossible do to some requiring all drivers having the ability to cross the border. apparently its easier to only have employees that can rather than keep track of who can and cannot.
I hear ya TruknLady.. there probably are similar non carrier schools that might cost less but this school is literally like 5 or 6 blocks from my current home and i am thinkn/hopin one will get wat one pays for.
Sharpshooter.. my lil funnies reply wasnt directed to you. am sorry you felt so as i found your reply to be very encouraging actually and will do my best now to either speak to names or insert quotes so it doesnt happen again.. but my lil sarcastic bit was in response not to your reply but Kickmeagains comment.. which wasnt meant to be insulting to him either..I am sorta posting on here not to focus so much on the price but more as to who i should apply with and who should be avoided if they can be..i only mention the price because i have seen several posts elsewhere on here asking what it is at NTTS.. a failed attempt at humor i guess.. cuz the price does seem ridiculous but then again when you look at what the course entails.. its yet another big business that needs to make money and hire/pay people to run it + maintain equip etc etc. as for my skin.. its there.
were everyone posting here sittin at a diner counter there woulda been a chuckle all around if my last post were spoken aloud.
my driving history to date is all class B (flatbed, box, concrete, coach, dump, roll-off, packer etc.) but most definitely entailed dealing as amicably as possible with many a gate guard, dispatcher, dot checkpoints and receiver. yeah they were jus lil 10 wheelers but i ran more than a few of em all over the NE region with a few requiring a break and a cpl overniters. its a world i enjoyed very much and I always looked at all the beautiful (even the big pumpkins..lol) 'big trucks' with respect & longing. I miss the road..pretty sure its my niche.
thank you all for posting so far and my apologies to any i may have come across snippy to.
its hard to express a tone, humorous or otherwise in text.
they have a class starting this morning but i might hold off until the next class starting on the 22nd of this month so I can speak to this schools placement director and see what kind of a list of eligibility my circumstances put me in.. if any at all. if they cant assist me in placement attending would be pointless and seeking out a carrier like TruknLady mentioned would be a better bet.Last edited: Nov 1, 2010

I know that most of these schools are more or less truck mills but atleast you wouldnt have to go for so long. If I'm not mistaken it is only a two week course. You already having some experience(if I read your post right) I do not see why you should have to go so long on top of having to go through a training course with whatever company you choose to go with. Blah...I don't know if I would want to do all that over again..Lol. If you do go that route though my advice would to be to check around. See exactly what kind of contract they want you to sign before they will pay for your school. Some will just pay a portion of it while others will pay the whole school if you fulfill the contract. Best of luck to you!
PusheR Thanks this. -
I agree with trukngrl, to upgrade your current license should be a lot less than 9 grand. I know up here to upgrade a class D (straight truck) to a class A is lots less time as well as less cost. Maybe call around to the companies that hire from NTTS and tell them about your experience and record. Let them tell you if they will even look at you for driving. No sense in paying a lot of money out if they will still say no. With experience they may even knock some time off the contract as the training will be shorter, or at least should be.
PusheR Thanks this.
